Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora is looking for energetic and innovative cooking instructors for the Cooking and Nutrition Program with the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department. Most classes will be held at Kitchen on the Green at the Expo Recreation Center in our professional teaching kitchen, but some classes will be held at other City of Aurora recreation centers.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.
 
This is a Contingent, Part-Time position with no benefits. Applicants must be able to work varied hours.

Despite the changes in Colorado law, the City of Aurora maintains a drug free workplace.  A positive test of marijuana is grounds for disqualification and ineligibility for employment with the city for one year or termination once hired.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, plans, and leads cooking classes for children, adults and families
  • Responsible for following nutrition guidelines and a commitment to using healthy, whole food ingredients as much as possible
  • Responsible for scheduling classes in advance
  • Record daily attendance
  • Set up/ tear down classroom as needed including cleaning of kitchen space
  • Teach and supervise in class room
  • Provide positive atmosphere and maintain class control
  • Ability to work effectively with students and to modify instruction to meet student needs
  • Provide excellent customer service and promote other Kitchen on the Green cooking programs
  • Able to work weekends as required
  • Must have an active email address
  • Performs other duties as assigned
 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: One year of teaching experience, preferably cooking classes. One year of experience cooking in a professional setting such as a restaurant or catering.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge: Practical and advanced cooking techniques, familiarity and expertise with kitchen equipment, experienced with particular types of cuisine. 

Skills: Good organizational skills and responsive to email and phone communications. Great written and verbal skills. 

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students and staff. Ability to follow instructions and deadlines for creation of menus, recipe writing and shopping list writing. Ability to maintain a safe environment at work site.  Ability to teach how to cook for everyday meals and adapt recipes, rather than just read a recipe.

Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required: Cooking equipment. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Ability to lift 25 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing.

Work Environment: Works in clean comfortable environment.

Equipment Used: This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
