This position serves as the Deputy State Epidemiologist and has a major role in overseeing all activities related to public health preparedness, emerging infections, disease surveillance and investigation and immunization. In an emergency, this position is expected to assume the responsibilities for the Division Chief (State Epidemiologist), if the Chief is unavailable for any reason. If two or more urgent public health crises are occurring simultaneously, this position is expected to assume primary responsibility for managing the response to one of the emergencies, as determined by the Division Chief. Major duties and responsibilities include administration, medical consultation, epidemiological investigation, surveillance and intervention, research and presentation of scientific findings and supervision.
Past experience as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer is preferred but not required. Experience in conducting disease surveillance and public health assessments, including data analysis and interpretation, as well as directing disease outbreak response is extremely desirable. Incumbent can expect to be working on issues especially related to emerging infections, healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.
Desirable Qualification: License to practice medicine in Hawaii with a board certification, preferably in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine or Family Practice. This board certification is not required but is desired.
And
One or more of the following:
1). Post-graduate training in the Epidemic Intelligence Service with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;
2). Experience in infectious disease (e.g. fellowship in infectious diseases or public health work conducting and supervising disease outbreak surveillance and investigations); or
3). A graduate degree in Epidemiology (MS, MPH, PhD or DrPH) plus at least two (2) years of relevant experience in infectious disease applied epidemiology (e.g., conducting and supervising disease outbreak surveillance and investigations in a health department or at CDC).

License: Applicants must possess a valid license to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of Hawaii at time of application.
Experience: Some positions require work experience as a physician. Some positions may require experience in a specialized field of medicine.
