THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITIONThe Recreation Department manages a full range of recreational and special activities for youth, adults and seniors. The department also schedules activities and rentals of buildings, picnic areas, sports fields and tennis courts. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES)
Aquatics Specialist II
Typical assignments include: Pool Manager, Camp Director.
In addition to the duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard I & II and Aquatics Specialist I:- Act as lead staff for the aquatics programs and camps as assigned
- Responsible for opening and closing aquatic facility
- Monitor activity enrollment in aquatic programs and camps. Call waitlists and/or cancel programs based upon enrollment minimums and maximums
- Create, modify and implement age-appropriate program curriculum
- Plan, lead and actively participate in training sessions
- Analyze program needs and recommend new and innovative program and training ideas
- Work with Lifeguard II and Aquatic Specialist I to maintain proper execution of camps, programs and facility rentals
- Provide excellent customer service and act as the point of contact for program participants to explain policies, procedures and solve problems
- Assist in building and maintaining activities, and staff scheduling for aquatics programs and services, and other clerical tasks using Recreation software applications
- Create and distribute marketing materials including schedules and registration documents for the Aquatics department
- Work at department and citywide special events
- Coordinate emergency response activities including training drills with other departments
- Participates in employee performance evaluations
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Aquatics Specialist I:- Swimming strokes progression, techniques, and teaching methods.
- Principles, practices, and procedures relating to operations and emergency response at an aquatics facility.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training,, Basic Water Rescue, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and First aid and CPR/AED .
- Modern office practices and procedures, including operation of computer equipment and related software.
- Basic information specific to assigned program activities and functions including principles and techniques of Water Safety Instructor training.
- Experience with competitive swimming and water fitness techniques including organization and design of workouts.
- USA Swimming rules and regulations and standard practices from a nationally recognized organization for water exercise programs.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Aquatics Specialist II:
Eighteen years of age or older and two or more seasons of experience as a senior lifeguard in an aquatics facility.
Training:
Aquatics Specialist II:
Current Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate from the American Red Cross.
Current Lifeguard Training Instructor, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor certificate from the American Red Cross or an equivalent institution.
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification or ability to obtain certification.
Current "Emergency Response" certificate from the American Red Cross or "Emergency Medical Technician" (EMT) certificate or equivalent training is highly desired.
Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate from the American Red Cross or an equivalent institution is highly desired.
Current First Aid certificate that meets the State of California Health & Safety Code (Title 22) requirements is highly desired.
Licenses/Certificates/ Other Requirements:
Aquatics Specialists are required to wear uniforms and may be required to work unusual hours, evenings, weekends and holidays. Individuals chosen for hire must be able to pass continuous skill audits. Aquatics Specialists must maintain current certifications and must participate in a minimum of 16 hours of formal rescue skills training per season.
