Laborer - Solid Waste Division

The purpose of this position is to provide semi-skilled and manual labor for the Public Works department. This is accomplished by performing general maintenance duties including repairing water leaks, changing meters, clearing service lines, collecting refuse, and repairing potholes.

Performs water and sewer repairs by locating water and sewer lines; changing valves; repairing fire hydrants; repairing/replacing meters; cleaning lines; and replacing defective equipment.

Provides street maintenance and repairs by clearing fallen limbs and brush; repairing street surfaces; repairing potholes; maintaining street signs; diverting traffic; painting pavement markings; clearing ditches and storm drains; and replacing street signs.

Collects refuse by loading trash; collecting recyclables; transporting to landfill; and working at the recycling center.

High school diploma or equivalent, Texas Driver's License, and experience performing manual labor required.  Prefer previous construction and/or mechanical experience. 

Ability to work in all weather conditions; to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).  May occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).  Subject to exposure to dust, fumes, vibration, noise, and dirty working conditions.  Frequent standing and walking.

Normally works a regularly assigned shift, but is subject to overtime, call-out, weekends and holidays.
