ABOUT THE POSITIONNurse Practitioner I/II: Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Psychiatry or his or her designee and in accordance with guidelines and restrictions imposed by professional registering, certifying, and/or licensing, to provide psychiatric services, which may include diagnostic and medical psychiatric care services, patient medication education, triage patient care, consultation and dialogue with community physicians and mental health professionals, and to perform related duties as required. Incumbents in this class work directly under the auspices of a designated physicianDISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSNurse Practitioner I/II: The Nurse Practitioner classification is distinguished by his or her responsibilities for evaluating persistently mentally ill individuals for medication and their associated side effects, and must possess a current Drug Device Furnishing (NFP) certificate for prescribing medication and medical devices as well as for providing medication refills. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner training program leading to certification as a Nurse Practitioner is mandatory. The Nurse Practitioner I classification is distinguished from the Nurse Practitioner II in the latter's ability to work under minimal supervision when performing psychiatric services. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Nurse Practitioner I/II: Under the supervision of a designated physician, take complete psychiatric and medical histories; perform complete physical examinations when appropriate; instruct and counsel patients regarding matters pertaining to their physical and mental health, such as long-term management of their illness; under direction, arrange for hospital admission of patients; assist physician on hospital rounds; facilitate the physician's referral of clients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies, and resources in the community; perform a variety of routine laboratory tests; maintain records and upkeep of equipment; assist the physician at medication clinics in ordering of drugs and supplies; assist the physician in providing services to clients requiring continued care, including the review and implementation of treatment and therapy plans.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Nurse Practitioner I/II: Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:
Knowledge of: Laws and regulations governing the assigned scope of practice; Causes and treatment of mental and emotional illness; Medical aspects of psychological problems; Principles and practices of psychiatric diagnosis (per Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM-IV]) and treatment of common mental disorders and medical problems; Anatomy and physiology of the human body; Sterile techniques and infection control; Psychopharmacology; Medicare and Medi-Cal regulations; Diagnostic protocols;
Ability to: Work effectively as an interdisciplinary team member in the delivery of mental health care services; Identify medical problems and psychiatric disorders and develop and implement treatment plans; Evaluate patient behavior; Perform thorough physical examinations; identify medical problems; Analyze crisis situations accurately and take effective action; Speak and write effectively, including preparing clear and concise reports and records; Assess clients and obtain a complete medical and psychiatric history; Support clients in their recovery, assuring consent for medication is obtained.IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will have a broad range of experience providing medical and/or psychiatric services to adults. They will be familiar with medi-cal billing and have worked in multi-disciplinary settings. They will have an awareness of serious mental illness in adults. This candidate should have experience working with adults and families, be an effective team member, have solid organizational skills and provide guidance and direction for other nurses in a supportive manner.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSNurse Practitioner I: Certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Candidates will be required to obtain a Drug Device Furnishing (NFP) Certificate within 6 months of initial hiring date. Must have knowledge of psychiatric medications. Prefer experience furnishing psychiatric medications to consumers with mental illness. Possession of a valid California driver's license.
Nurse Practitioner II: Certification as a Nurse Practitioner and three years experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a psychiatric facility or a medical practice that primarily provides psychiatric services. Certification as an Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from an appropriate credentialing organization may be substituted for the three years of psychiatric experience. Candidates will be required to obtain a Drug Device Furnishing (NFP) Certificate within 6 months of initial hiring date. Must have knowledge of psychiatric medications. Prefer experience furnishing psychiatric medications to consumers with mental illness. Possession of a valid California driver's license.SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS

Depending on the provisions of the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) and other applicable laws, an employee in this classification will be covered under one of the following CalPERS retirement formulas: (1) 2% at 55, (2) 2% at 60, or (3) 2% at 62. An employee in this classification will also contribute 7% of his/her pay to this plan, or will contribute such other amount to the plan as authorized by PEPRA and other applicable laws.
