Description

This is a non-merit position. Recruitment for this position will be handled by the Family Court of St. Louis County and any questions concerning this posting should be directed to the Court's Human Resources Department at (314) 615-4471.

The Family Court of St. Louis County is hiring for On-Call Female Detention Deputy Juvenile Officers within the Detention Department. Our Detention Deputy Juvenile Officer positions are established with a Bona Fide Requirement: Occupational Qualification requiring that the candidate be of the same gender as the residential unit.

Work involves performing on-call work (i.e. as needed, no guarantee of hours) supervising the residents of a juvenile detention unit in all phases of residential group living or at the front desk control area. On-call Detention Deputy Juvenile Officer positions provide coverage to the Detention Center during the absences of permanent Detention staff. Applicants must be available to work two, eight hour shifts per week on an as needed basis. Primarily our on-call staff cover 3 p.m. - 11 p.m. and 11 p.m. - 7 a.m. shifts. Holiday and weekend availability are required.
 

Examples of Duties

Control Desk

  • Participates in admission and release processes.
  • Upon admission, observes juvenile for marks of physical abuse or other unhealthy symptoms; orients new residents in the detention unit(s) by explaining rights, privileges, rules, regulations, and expected behavior; assigns residents to rooms.
  • Conducts Miranda Rights for juveniles upon admission into the facility.
  • Conducts juvenile and adult record searches and demonstrates a working knowledge of Kids 2000, Justice Information System (JIS), Case.net, and Regis.
  • Assists police officers, Court staff and other agencies conducting business in the control desk area.
  • Completes record checks on juveniles; maintains confidentiality.
  • Conducts room, unit and/or body searches of residents.
  • Provides first aid (immediate care and treatment) to individuals who are injured or ill; dispenses medication to residents as directed by medical personnel.
  • Performs after hours Children's Division Hotline placements and provides the reporting police department with appropriate documentation.
  • Monitors visitation process for juvenile and their guardians, insuring authorization of each visitor.
  • Acts as backup for the unit leaders when assistance is needed.
  • Provides coverage for the unit leader as need.
Unit Leader
  • Treats all juveniles within their constitutional rights and those specified by the Juvenile Code.
  • Observes residents' behaviors and attitudes; maintains a daily log of occurrences and the general behavior of residents.
  • Consults with other staff, including the juvenile's Delinquency Services Deputy Juvenile Officer, regarding the juvenile's physical or emotional needs; performs crisis intervention as needed; remains alert to suicide possibilities.
  • Maintains order and discipline among residents; escorts residents to meals and other programmed activities; operates security equipment such as keys, automated door controls, paging systems, closed circuit television systems, etc.
  • Conducts room, unit and/or body searches of residents. Provides first aid (immediate care and treatment) to individuals who are injured or ill; dispenses medication to residents as directed by medical personnel.
  • Assists Detention Administration with the development of special programs for juveniles who can not function in regular programs.
  • Teaches personal hygiene to the juveniles; supervises their daily showering.
  • Physically restrains residents when necessary; intercedes in physical altercations between residents and residents and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related social/behavioral science (e.g., Sociology, Human Services, Criminal Justice, etc.); or four years of responsible, paraprofessional social service experience working with juvenile delinquents and/or their families may be substituted in lieu of college; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
