The City of Pasadena is seeking highly qualified Electrical Distribution Mechanics to join our Power Department team in performing skilled electrical work in the construction, maintenance and repair of an overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution system. Essential Functions
Job Responsibilities
The following represents some of the essential duties and are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Installs and maintains transmission, distribution and related equipment in both overhead and underground, requiring climbing poles and vault entry.
2. Installs cross arms and other fixtures.
3. Installs and connects transformers, oil and gas switches, capacitor banks, lightning arrestors, fuses, street lights, house services and meters.
4. Removes old poles and installs new poles, anchors and guys.
5. Transfers energized lines to new poles.
6. Installs, services and repairs underground duct lines, terminals, cables and associated equipment such as transformers and switches.
7. Makes up splices.
8. Connects underground electrical equipment.
9. Operates and maintains in an orderly fashion trucks and power equipment.
10. Makes emergency repairs on overhead and underground lines.
11. Performs overhead and underground distribution switching and sectionalizing operations on various types of energized equipment.
12. Sets single phase, three phases, and delta meters.
13. Pulls slack out of primary and secondary wires.
14. Tests pole lines and other facilities.
15. Performs work in accordance with G.0. 95, 128 and 165, and in accordance with safety regulations.
16. Tests and filters insulating oil from energized equipment.
17. Maintains gas cable.
18. Operates equipment in the underground distribution system.
19. Installs and maintains electrical fans and blowers in the underground system, including new blowers, vault lights and vault utility plugs, H & J's, transformers and sump pumps.
20. Operates heavy equipment both auto and stick shift transmission, gas diesel cable pulling trucks, cable reel dollies, Digger Derrick, fork lifts, skip loaders, cranes, rodding machines and various other specialized equipment.
21. Performs inspections of city, commercial, industrial and residential underground power vaults structures and documenting conditions and suggested improvements.
22. Trains and instructs apprentices, helpers, and journey level workers assisting on assigned jobs.Qualification Guidelines

Knowledge of:
1. Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installing, maintaining and operating all types of overhead and underground electrical systems.
2. Transformer removal, installation, hook-ups and connections for overhead and underground distribution equipment.
3. Basic electrical theory; G.O.95, 128 and 165 related safety orders.
4. Fundamental safety regulations.
5. First aid and methods of applying resuscitation.Ability to:
1. Ability to operate specialized material handling and cable pulling equipment.
2. Climb poles and work at heights.
3. Work in underground facilities.
4. Follow oral and written directions.
5. Think and act effectively in emergencies.
6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees and the public.Education, Training and Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance would qualify. For example: attainment of journey EDM (or equivalent class) status through successful completion of a State of California approved EDM apprentice program.
Selection Process
Selection is based on review of applications and supplemental applications submitted. Those who appear best qualified may be invited to any combination of written, performance or oral appraisal to further evaluate their job-related experience, knowledge, skills and abilities. Probationary work test period is one year. Special Requirements
A California class “A” license is required. Applicants who have a California Class “C” license or equivalent at time of appointment must obtain a valid California Class “A” driver's license prior to the completion of the probationary period. A crane certification may be required based on job assignment.
Possession of Class “A” California driver's license is a condition of continued employment along with a satisfactory driving record. Annual Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and Asbestos Abatement certification also required as a condition of continuous employment.
An Electrical Distribution Mechanic is subject to emergency call-outs 24 hours a day, and therefore must have a telephone.
