Purpose
This position protects the lives and properties of citizens through the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. An incumbent in this position may be assigned special duties such as Narcotics, Bike Patrol, Crime Prevention, Marine Patrol, Mounted Patrol, Traffic Investigator, Property Crimes, Forensics, or Recruitment.
Applicants hired as Police Officer Trainees will start at $16.85/hour. Upon graduation of the Academy, applicants will move to the position of Police Officer at $18.86/hour.Applicants with a Bachelor's degree or higher, prior military experience with an honorable discharge, OR at least 2 years of acceptable law enforcement experience are eligible for a higher starting pay amount. Enforces federal and state laws, city ordinances, court orders, and warrants.
Conducts investigations and writes reports on incidents involving area of duty.
Patrols assigned areas to detect and prevent crime; answers calls for service and assistance.
Investigates criminal complaints and accidents; conducts crime and accident scene analysis.
Enforces motor vehicle laws by stopping violators and taking appropriate enforcement action.
Assists investigators and personnel from the District Attorney's office in the preparation of cases for trial; testifies in court.
Prepares timely and accurate reports; reviews investigative, arrest, accident, and supplemental reports for accuracy.
Questions witnesses and complainants; investigates suspects.
Attends community meetings; organizes neighborhood watches; makes presentations to churches, schools, civic organizations, and business leaders; participates in agency volunteer programs.
Performs organized patrols of high crime areas.
Writes and executes search warrants; serves warrants, court orders, and subpoenas.
Maintains vehicle, firearms, and other equipment.
Directs traffic as needed.
Collects and maintains evidence; ensures proper chain of custody.
Coordinates investigative efforts with local, state, and federal agencies.
May perform the duties of Narcotics Officer; conducts investigations and surveillance operations; conducts undercover, buy/walk, and buy/bust operations.
May perform the duties of Bike Patrol Officer.
May perform the duties of Crime Prevention Officer; serves as representative to neighborhood association and watch meetings; serves as liaison to the community for the precinct.
May perform the duties of Marine Patrol Officer; patrols waterways; ensures boater safety.
May perform the duties of Mounted Patrol Officer; patrols assigned area; performs crowd control.
May perform the duties of Traffic Investigator; investigates serious and fatal accidents; performs duties on call.
May perform the duties of Property Officer; maintains property and evidence; maintain property and evidence records.
May perform the duties of Forensics Officer; collects and processes evidence; creates photo lineups; prepares photos, videos, and fingerprints.
May perform the duties of Recruitment Officer; attends job fairs; assist with the hiring process.
May perform the duties of Gang Unit Officer; investigates suspected gang-related activities and crimes; monitors gang trends.

- POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE
Valid driver's license and high school diploma or GED is required. Applicant must be 21 years of age by the date of hire and must be a citizen of the United States or a repatriated or naturalized citizen of the United States.
