Summary

The purpose of this position is to operate transit vehicles safely
to include 35 to 60 ft buses used in public transit service  in the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. The employee assumes responsibility for the safety of CHT customers and equipment and  performs routine vehicle inspections to ensure proper operations. Upon the successful completion of the 6 to 8 week training class, full-time opportunities are available.

Essential Functions

Safely operates transit vehicles to pick up and transport customers while adhering to transit vehicle route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous manner

Completes familiarization with system and safety features; geography and roadways of an assigned route and of the entire service area; traffic rules, regulations and laws, and transfer points

Refers to time schedules and instructions for pull-outs, line service, pull-ins, and off-route trips

Provides information on bus services to customers, which includes bus schedules, routes, and area information

Receives and transmits two-way radio messages involving accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or other authorized CHT business utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure customer and individual safety

Performs vehicle operations at varying hours of day and night. Will work outside regular business hours as required by service demands

Writes reports and completes forms as required, may prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents incidents, breakdowns and mechanical defects, as required at the end of their shift

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Federal, state, and town traffic and safety rules and regulations
  • the geography and road system of the town and Transit coverage area.
     
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words
  • Perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses
  • Model behaviors that are consistent with our value of RESPECT
     
Education
High school diploma or equivalency or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties.

Experience
None

Certification
Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a Class B CDL with P (Passenger Endorsement) issued by the State of North Carolina.  In addition, must have NC CDL Class B permit prior to the beginning of training. The Apprentice receive Class B CDL training during the 6 to 8 week training class.
