The Los Angeles County Office of Education is looking for individuals to assist teachers in the supervision to perform medical treatments and procedures necessary in providing specialized physical health care services to pupils with exceptional needs. 

 

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of:

The ideal candidate should have the ability to:

§        Proper health care techniques such as suctioning, when needed to clear air passages, care of tracheotomy tube and skin around intuition, tube replacement; gastrostomy tube feeding; colostomy, iliostomy care

§       Assist in the instruction of reading, writing and mathematics

§       Clean and sterile treatment techniques

§       Successfully operate one or more pieces of special medical equipment after receiving appropriate training

§       First aid procedures and techniques

§       Recognize and effectively respond to emergency and/or hazardous conditions

§       Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques

§       Establish positive communication with pupils and motivate them to participate learning activities

§       Elementary concepts of child development and behavior

§       Demonstrate competency in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation

§       Community emergency medical resources

§       Maintain emotional control under difficult situations and effectively react to emergencies

§       Reading, speaking, and writing in English

§       Maintain patience and tact in working with children with special physical/emotional needs

Required Education and Experience 

 

Education:     One year of paid or volunteer experience providing related health care services, (a minimum of 2000 verifiable hours of related experience as a volunteer in a hospital or health care setting may be substituted for the paid experience).  The completion of 30 college semester units in nursing or other appropriate health-related field may be substituted for the six months of the required experience.

Experience:   Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Notes:  Must possess current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certificates from approved training programs; must be in general good health as job may require physical strength, stamina, agility, dexterity, good hearing, good central and peripheral vision; some assignments require constant attention to protect physical safety in a classroom where students, because of the nature and severity of their disabilities are accident prone, or because of assaultive or self-abusive tendencies could cause serious injury to themselves and others; some positions may required the ability to lift or move pupils who weigh up to 50 pounds; may be required to sue a multi-person lift or learn the use of mechanical lift or move pupils who may weigh in excess of 50 pounds; may assist in transporting pupil from home to school and return; some positions in this classification may require the availability of private transportation.

Selection Process

 

The examination process for this classification will consist of a written examination and a performance examination. This examination shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list.  Successful candidates are merged into the eligibility list according to their final examination score.  All eligibility lists shall be established for one year or until there are fewer than three ranks of eligible candidates who are available.

 

For additional information on our selection procedures please visit Exam Preparation on our website.  Selection and promotion are based on a competitive examination process.  Candidates who pass all exam parts are ranked according to overall exam score and placed on an eligibility (hiring) list.  Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks.  Eligibility lasts for 12 months; however, additional recruitment may occur under a separate bulletin with additional candidates being merged onto the eligibility list.   Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5).  In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272).  Veterans’ Credit may be awarded for entry jobs.
