The Position

Aquatics Program Instructor is an part-time, year-round position. Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor-Aquatics, the person in this position will organize, lead, and teach specialized aquatic activities; enforce regulations, and do related work as required.

Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public and work cooperatively with others. Provide effective motivation of program participants and encourage continued participation.

Required Appearance: Persons hired must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Parks and Recreation Department.
 

Key Responsibilities

Lead and conduct specialized aquatics programing consistent with the program as outlined by the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department. Program workouts into an electronic timing system, provide direction to participants, provide motivation for continued participation and corrective feedback. Help design/implement a seasonal plan. Organize, direct, lead and conduct aquatic activities and effectively teach aquatic skills.

Assist in rendering first aid or CPR as necessary.

Qualifications

Principles and techniques of aquatic leadership and instruction, training programs for adults and electronic timing systems.

Possess current certificates in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (CPR-FPR). Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor are preferred as well as specialized certifications in Aquatics Exercise (AEA certified) or Masters Swimming (USMS Coach Member).
Equivalent training certificates will be accepted if approved by the County of San Diego EMS authority.  

Experience & Education

Must have background in aquatics, particularly in Masters Swimming and/or Aquatic Fitness as a coach and/or instructor.
 
Special Requirements: Must be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and split-shifts dependent upon season program needs. Total work hours may not exceed 1,560 hours from July 1 to June 30 the following year.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE:
1.         Photocopies (both sides) of required certifications must accompany application form to be eligible for consideration.
2.         Candidates will be evaluated for employment consideration on the basis of the submitted application and supplemental questionnaire.
3.         An interview of those best qualified will be used to rank the applicants for final selection.
                                                                                      
Appointments are contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint records check and verification of State of California negative tuberculosis test requirement.
Successful applicants will be offered employment on an hourly at-will basis only. Employment with the City may be discontinued at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal or hearing.

Part time positions do not have benefits, and cannot exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1- June 30).

Part-time employees with the City of Carlsbad receive 24 hours of sick leave per fiscal year (July 1- June 30) and are eligible to use paid sick leave 90 days after the first day of work (reported work hours).
