BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of a special education teacher or nurse, assist in providing health and instructional assistance to individuals or small groups of special education students who may have one or more orthopedic, learning, emotional and health-related disabilities; assist students in learning activities and with a variety of physical and health needs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assist in the instruction of individual or small groups of special needs students with one or more orthopedic, developmental, physical and emotional disabilities; explain basic concepts of reading, writing, arithmetic and other subjects and reinforce instruction appropriate for each student; Assist students with basic and special health care needs which may include assistance with washing hands and face, brushing teeth, toileting and diapering, changing clothing, feeding, oral suctioning, catheterizing and other assistance required by the individual student, and as directed by professional medical staff.

Monitor and maintain the health and safety of students with chronic and acute health needs; administer first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other health related interventions according to established policies, guidelines and protocols, and as directed by professional medical staff.

Prepare, copy and distribute classroom materials and visual aids in support of instructional programs; perform general clerical duties related to classroom instruction and activities; operate standard office equipment such as duplicating machines, laminator, typewriter and others.

Operate a variety of specialized medical equipment and assistive devices including stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, syringes for gastronomy tube feedings, pulmo-aid for administering breathing medication, oxygen tank, ventilator/respirator and other equipment.

Assist students with wheelchairs, braces and other orthopedic equipment; position and reposition students; assist students getting on and off buses; accompany students to various locations on campus.

Assist teachers in maintaining appropriate order and student conduct; respond to student outbursts and misconduct, utilizing approved behavior modification and intervention techniques in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Assist speech and physical therapists, psychologists, adaptive physical education teachers and other specialists with physical developmental activities; assist students in developing cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, feeding and self-help skills, and behavior control.

Attend IEP meetings to provide and obtain information and translate for limited- or non-English speaking parents and students; write notes and make telephone calls to parents as requested.

Assist in administering and scoring tests and pupil work; record grades on papers and in roll books as assigned; take and record attendance.

Assist in preparing exhibits, displays and bulletin boards; set up and operate audio-visual equipment and computer-assisted learning programs; operate listening center equipment as required.

Distribute and collect instructional resource materials as assigned.

Attend open house, back to school night and in-service training activities.

Maintain work areas in a neat and orderly condition.

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school

AND

Completion of 48 units of higher education study OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR past assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.

EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to two years of experience working with children with special needs.

LICENSES AND OTHER CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid first-aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificates are required within 30 days of appointment.

NOTE: This position is subject to the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Pay increases are subject to the Step Advancement agreement per the CSEA contract.

This position includes the following benefits:
1. Paid Holidays: Up to 15 holidays per year.
2. Paid Vacation: Up to 12 vacation days per year. Vacation is prorated based on months worked per year. Employees may earn up to 24 vacation days per year based on longevity with the District.
3. Health Benefits: For positions 30 hours or more per week.
4. Childcare & Education: As an employee of the district, your children can enroll and attend school (K-12) at Bassett.
