Description

Are you seeking a career with purpose, a position serving your community with work that truly matters? If so, we are accepting applications for the position of Corrections Officer. 

 

We will screen your application and if you best meet the qualifications, you will be invited to take our Corrections Officer Video Test (COVT).  The test includes a variety of scenarios with multiple-choice answers including reading, writing, and counting assessments.
The test will take at least 3 hours to complete. Test dates are yet to be determined. Applicants will be notified by Email aas soon as dates are available.

Your application is valid for 6 months after the date of submission.  If you are not notified within 6 months, you will need to reapply. 

Corrections Officers are responsible for maintaining the safety, custody, security, and control of inmates at all levels of security in all environments, including: indirect or direct supervision, prisoner processing, and work release.
Positions are assigned to the Justice Center located in Clayton and are full time. This is a 24/7 operation; employees may work day, evening, or night shifts.  Visit the Justice Services website for detailed information relating to the management of the St. Louis County Justice Center.

The starting salary is $17.71 per hour. After successful completion of a six-month probationary period, the salary will increase to $18.15 per hour effective January 1, 2018.  Applicants hired full time on or after January 17, 2018 will be participating in the revised retirement plan.  New employees will be required to contribute 4% of their salary to this plan.

Examples of Duties

Maintaining order and discipline within the housing units.

Supervising, escorting, and transporting inmates.

Coordinating and monitoring daily activities of inmates.

Patrolling and inspecting housing units and inmate cells.

Conducting scheduled and random searches of inmates and assigned areas to maintain a safe and secure environment.

Maintaining an appropriate record of daily activities, disciplinary action, inmate movements, and services provided.  Entering the information into a computerized system.

Enforcing rules and regulations to ensure adherence to policy and defined procedures.

Assisting fellow officers.

Working to achieve the highest level of correlation to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility.

Performing such additional duties as may properly be required of a position in this job class, with the required abilities and under the indicated working conditions and environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.  
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license upon completion Corrections Officer Video Test (COVT).  
  • Completion of 30 credit hours in behavioral sciences, criminology, corrections, or a related area and two years of responsible work experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Clear police record.
 
  
BACKGROUND CHECK:
Candidates are required to have a police record free of any pending charges and felony convictions.

Additional Information

The selection procedure will include but is not limited to the following:

  1. Satisfactory completion of an employment application.
  2. Selection for the COVT based on minimum qualifications from the employment application.
  3. Passing the COVT based on a qualifying score determined by the Division of Personnel.
  4. Applicants passing the COVT will be placed on the eligible list.  The Division of Personnel will certify the top candidates from the eligible list to the Department of Justice Services for further consideration.  Your name will remain on the eligible list for up to two years.

All applicants conditionally offered a position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be borne by the County.

Paid medical insurance, 20 days PTO the first year (paid time off) based upon seniority, 10 paid holidays.  Employees hired full time on or after January 17, 2018 will be participating in the St. Louis County revised retirement plan.  Employees will be required to contribute 4% of their salary to this defined benefit  plan with vesting after 7 years, paid life insurance, credit union, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, pre-tax premium pay plan, dependent care and medical expense reimbursement plans, and short and long term disability insurance.
