DESCRIPTION

Positions in the advance Accounting Technician job family are assigned responsibility for performing paraprofessional technical work involving the maintenance and reporting of financial accounting data. This includes maintenance of appropriate accounts, ledgers, journals, funds records, and other financial records; reconciliation and preparation of various financial statements and documents, processing of various transactions for payment of invoices or expense vouchers, processing of payroll data, and the preparation of routine or standard reports concerning financial operations and data. Work specialization may depend on the specific position. Many positions require the person to learn or be familiar with agency specific procedures and account records. Person selected should have some knowledge of accounting procedures and accounting terminology, of business arithmetic, and of modern office procedures. Knowledge of government financial record keeping would be a plus. Ability is required in the use of office equipment such as calculators, and personal computers. Ability to work with large amounts of numerical data. Most positions require some proficiency in creating and using spreadsheets to review and present accounting data.

This announcement is used to maintain an applicant pool for current and expected future hiring needs statewide. Appointments may be made at the 3 or 4 level depending on the position and the needs of the agency. Jobs may be located in Charleston, or in various facilities and offices throughout the state. Accounting Technician 4 is advanced level paraprofessional accounting work and may involve more complex balancing and reconciling of multiple accounts. May also include leading other Accounting Technicians.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Training for Accounting Technician 3 and 4:
Graduation from a standard four-year high school or the equivalent.

Required Experience:

Accounting Technician 3: Three years of full time or equivalent part time paid bookkeeping, accounting or related experience. General clerical or office support work experience is not qualifying.

Accounting Technician 4: Four years of full time or equivalent part time paid bookkeeping, accounting or related experience.

Substitution for Experience: Successful completion of college-level Accounting courses from a regionally accredited college or university may be substituted at the following rate of 3 semester hours of accounting for each six months required experience. (5 qtr hrs)
Successful completion of related business school or vocational training may be substituted for the experience at the rate of 1080 clock hours of completed related training equals 1 year of experience.

Examples of Duties:
Reviews accounts, ledgers, claims, invoices, purchase orders, receipts, or similar materials for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with laws and regulations. Prepares bank deposits and/or checks.
Examines accounting records to assure adherence to accounting laws and regulations; verifies calculations and ensures accuracy and validity of transactions. Performs posting, encumbering of funds, and balancing receipts of others.
Maintains accounting records; gathers data and prepares moderate to complex financial statements and reports from records maintained.
May assist supervisor in preparing budget by compiling data, preparing summaries and requests, and developing cost projections.
May train and review work of clerical staff.
