Definition
Under direction, to perform professional technical engineering involved in the development of design specifications of transit vehicles (buses, auto, support vehicles); to provide services and conduct special studies requiring the application of professional knowledge.

Will conduct studies in support of vehicle maintenance projects.

This class differs from that of the higher level Senior Mechanical Engineer – Automotive Systems in that the latter has sole technical responsibility for the vehicle specifications. The former class is the full journey level and works under the direction of the Senior Mechanical Engineer – Automotive Systems on specific engineering problems or as a project supervisor over lower level professional engineers and technicians.

Essential Job Functions

Typical Tasks
· May assign work to and supervise automotive technicians and other engineers;
· Provides technical engineering solutions to specific problems;
· Reviews pertinent literature to maintain currency with the state-of-the-art;
· Conducts studies to evaluate new equipment design and maintainability;
· Prepares cost estimates for new and replacement equipment;
· Evaluates parts;

· Prepares technical reports and makes estimates of a specialized nature in connection with  engineering project;
· Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Employment Standards
Development of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is most typically obtained through training and experience equivalent to graduation from college with major work in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or related field and four years of professional mechanical engineering experience in automotive systems or related field.
Registration as a professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of California at the time of appointment.

 

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:
· The theory of methods, materials and equipment used in the design, maintenance, operations and construction of automotive equipment;
· Principles of supervision, design, operation and maintenance of shop and shop equipment;
· Government regulations pertaining to the design and operation of vehicles.

Ability to:
· Perform design and layout work;
· Analyze automotive engineering problems and work out effective solutions;
· Supervise and review the work of others;
· Prepare design specifications;
· Prepare technical reports;
· Stay current with changes in technology;
· Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work.

As defined by the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA):

  • Classic Members' retirement benefit formula is 2% @55.
  • New Members' retirement benefit formula is 2% @62.

All AFSCME, SEIU, TAEA, and Non-Rep employees hired on or after 01/09/12 pay 7% of salary toward the required employee contribution to PERS.

Social Security taxes will be deducted from each employee’s bi-weekly salary.
