General Purpose

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, take verbatim notes at court hearings, trials and other proceedings; transcribe stenographic notes to produce transcripts of courtroom activities.

Examples of Essential Duties; Minimum Qualifications

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this classification.  This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

 

1.     Attend civil and criminal hearings, trials and other proceedings to take stenographic notes.

 

2.     Record verbatim the verbal presentations and communication during courtroom proceedings; read back questions or other portions as requested.

 

3.     Transcribe stenographic notes to prepare draft transcripts.

 

4.     Edit draft copy and prepare official transcript of courtroom activities; prepare additional copies as requested; bind, cover and file with Court Clerk as appropriate.

 

5.     Operate computerized stenographic equipment including Computer Aided Transcription system (CAT), printer, copier and typewriter.

 

6.     Organize calendars or proceedings in order to retrieve information on past proceedings; store stenographic notes on paper or on computer disk for easy retrieval; organize general bookkeeping for tax and transcript billing purposes.

 

7.     Communicate with court-related personnel regarding work schedules transcript timelines and billings.

 

8.     Travel to branch courts to attend hearings, trials, sentencing, change of plea and other legal proceedings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

·         Legal and medical terminology.

·         Oral and written communication skills.

·         Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

·         Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

·         Courtroom proceedings and activities in civil and criminal cases.

·         Operation of office and computerized stenographic equipment relating to court reporting.

 

Ability to:

·         Attend court hearings, trials and other proceedings to take stenographic notes.

·         Take verbatim notes of verbal communication in the courtroom.

·         Accurately transcribe stenographic notes and prepare transcripts on computerized stenographic equipment.

·         Read, review, edit and correct written materials.

·         Take stenographic notes of multi-voice legal proceedings at the rate of 200 words per minute.

·         Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

·         Maintain up-to-date reference materials regarding court reporting.

·         Work independently with little direction.

·         Attend court proceedings at various locations.

Education & Experience; Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to:  requirements to become a Certified Shorthand Reporter.

 

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Court's vehicle insurance policy.

 

Must be a Certified Shorthand Reporter (C.S.R.) in the state of California.

Misc Information / Scheduled Exams

Exams have not been scheduled. 

Your resume will be forwarded to the Court Reporter Coordinator for future consideration.  You may or may not hear from the Court as it relates to this posting as the Court uses per diem Court Reporters on a very limited basis.
