The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals for the position of Psychiatrist for the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) located in Walla Walla, WA.  This recruitment will remain open until filled.

Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) is a 2000 bed facility for high and medium custody men. It is located just outside the city, farms and vineyards of Walla Walla. Four separate facilities exist within the institution, each of which houses a different custody level of offender. WSP is currently engaged in major facility construction; replacing old facilities with newer high custody housing units. WSP has just opened a new standalone health care building with inpatient and outpatient medical and mental health care and a six chair dental operatory.

The Department has several options for providing mental health care to those who require treatment. All major institutions can provide temporary or short-term in-patient psychiatric care for crisis management and stabilization. In our continuing efforts to improve our comprehensive system of care, initiative and clinical leadership are highly prized.
 

Responsibilities

Conduct psychiatric evaluations, prescribe appropriate medication and monitor the psychiatric care of patients, both in the general population and the inpatient units. Act in a leadership role to set and maintain standards of psychiatric care for the offenders within the facility. Consult with and advise physicians, psychologists, pharmacists, nurses and institutional administrative staff on matters relating to psychiatric services. Serve as a leader on the mental health team. Work with practitioners across the state to assure best utilization of our statewide system of care.
 

Qualifications

  • Board certified or eligible for certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
  • Current (or the ability to obtain prior to hire) Washington Physician and Surgeon Licensure
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and experience in directing medical operations.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of individuals ranging from correctional administrator and staff, health care professionals to patient advocates and other laypersons.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
