Description

This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be not less than one year nor more than two years from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such designated length as to satisfy the training and experience requirement for the Evidence Technician. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probationary period, the Evidence Technician Trainee shall attain permanent status as Evidence Technician.


Duties

 
1.
Learns and assists in performing specialized support functions in the Office of the Medical Examiner.
 *
2.
Learns and assists in receiving, classifying, assigning, storing, and releasing property and evidence without breaking the chain of evidence.
 
3.
Learns and assists in checking items and information received.
 *
4.
Learns and assists in receiving forensic evidence examination requests and assuring the completeness and accuracy of case specific information through communication with the submitting agency or agencies' electronic Records Management Systems (RMS).   
 *
5.
Learns and assists in securing evidence in accordance with ASCLD/LAB-FBI Quality Assurance Standards and ABFT evidence control guidelines.
 *
6.
Learns and assists in entering forensic evidence into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or equivalent evidence control system.
 
7.
Learns and assists in transporting and delivering a variety of evidence, laboratory reports and related documents.
 
8.
Learns and assists in recording postmortem exemplar impressions (fingerprints) for the Medical Examiner, entering case specific information into the LIMS and securing record evidence, as required.
 *
9.
Learns and assists in testifying in court to identify sealed evidence and chain of custody of inventoried evidence, as required.

Qualifications

Training and Experience
Graduation from high school.
 
Necessary Special Requirement
Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York.
 
NOTE:        Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
