DUTIES

An Accounting Records Supervisor assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of a group of clerical employees engaged in the preparation, processing, and maintenance of a wide variety of accounting or financial records; or supervises accounting clerical personnel serving as cashiers or tellers; applies sound supervisory techniques in building and maintaining an effective work force; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.

Examples of Duties

  1. Two years of full-time paid experience as an accounting Clerk, or in a class at least at the level of Senior Clerk which provides experience in office clerical accounting or cashiering.
  2. Achievement of a passing score on the qualifying written test for Accounting Records Supervisor.  7/18/2008

WHERE TO APPLY & APPLICATION DEADLINE

  1. The qualifying written test passing score will be determined after the test is administered and will be based on the overall performance of the candidate group and the projected number of vacancies
  2. Candidates who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.

The examination will consist of a qualifying written test and an interview.
 
In the qualifying written test, which will consist of multiple-choice questions, candidates may be examined for knowledge of: principles and practices of bookkeeping, including reconciliations, payables and receivables, and posting entries in ledgers; fund accounting terminology and the types of funds involved; Financial Management Information System (FMIS) and Supply Management System (SMS) functions and procedures; regulations governing expenditures; City fiscal operations and responsibilities for approval of budget, demands, and fund accounts; types and purposes of expenditure authorities; nature of spending limitations in annual purchase orders and formal contracts; basic arithmetic; standard office practices, supervisory principles and practices, including equal employment opportunity principles, employee relations, and Memoranda of Understanding pertaining to subordinate personnel; principles of letter and report writing, including correct English usage and spelling; deal tactfully and effectively with others; and other necessary knowledge and abilities.
                                    
In the interview, emphasis will be placed on the adequacy of the candidate’s experience, training and professional qualifications as they provide the knowledge of: principles and practices of bookkeeping; FMIS and SMS; ability to: gather and coordinate accounting documents with other governmental entities; apply sound supervisory techniques, including equal employment opportunity responsibilities; communicate effectively and tactfully to maintain effective interpersonal relations; and other necessary knowledge and abilities.
 
The qualifying written test will be administered in a single half-day session on SATURDAY, AUGUST 30, 2008, in Los Angeles. Candidates will be notified by mail of the time and place of the qualifying written test.
 
Candidates will be notified later by mail of the time and location of the interview, which will be held in Los Angeles.
 
NOTES:  
         
1. This examination is based on a validation study, and as provided by Civil Service Commission Rule 4.20, the written test will not be subject to candidate inspection.
2. As a covered entity under the Fair Employment and Housing Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the City of Los Angeles does not discriminate on the basis of disability and, upon request, will provide reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to its programs, services, and activities.
3. Applications are accepted subject to review to ensure that minimum qualifications are met. Candidates may be disqualified at any time if it is determined that they do not possess the minimum qualifications stated on this bulletin.
4. A final average score of 70% is required to be placed on the eligible list.
5. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to file on a promotional basis.
6. Seniority credit at the rate of 0.25 of a point for each year of continuous service will be added to the weighted test score of each candidate.
