Description

Under general supervision, make arrangements for client services, provide basic services to clients, and maintain records pertaining to client progress.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Employees in this class perform tasks with technical skill and personal initiative; the tasks include a broad range of routine clerical, technical, and client-based tasks that may be accomplished in an office environment or include interpersonal contact with service providers and/or clients. To assist professional service providers, some positions may maintain a non-complex caseload.

Job Functions (Duties/Responsibilities): 

  1. Meet with clients to determine their needs, make referrals and provide data to social service agencies to assist them in obtaining social services (may work with interpreters to communicate with clients).
  2. Explain legal requirements and departmental and County policies to clients; answer clients' billing questions and, when appropriate, bill agencies for client services provided.
  3. Meet with clients to obtain information about work, family, criminal and/or health status and communicate this information to screening committees, judges, and/or probation officers.
  4. Confer with other staff about routine client care and/or progress.
  5. Contact social service providers to arrange for clients to meet with them.
  6. Read background files about clients and check relevant computer databases to obtain client information.
  7. Monitor clients' progress on a limited basis in following treatment plans, obtaining stable employment or completing probation requirements and record notes about clients' participation in programs and their progress.
  8. Arrange transportation of and/or transport clients.
  9. Teach clients about job search, interviewing and job retention skills.
  10. Confer with judges, healthcare providers, prosecutors and/or social workers about how to service client needs.
  11. Support a team by carrying out court orders pertaining to clients (e.g., fingerprinting, obtaining urine samples, issuing summons).
  12. Compile records of department statistics pertaining to number of clients served, client placements, client outcomes and/or funding.

Employment Standards:

Education and Experience:
One of the following:
  • Two years of responsible, paid social service experience providing direct client service
  • A two-year human services certificate
  • Note: College coursework in the behavioral sciences can be substituted for the required work experience.
Licenses and Certificates:
Some positions require a valid driver's license. All positions within the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation require a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: community resources and social services available to serve clients; client interviewing techniques.

Ability to: communicate orally and in writing; establish strong relationships with clients, co-workers and the public; accurately record information.

Skill in: use of personal computers
