Job Description

This class performs varied assignments maintaining order and discipline among detainees remanded to the custody of the Sheriff. This class is responsible for the supervision, protection, care, custody and control or investigation of incarcerated inmates and other detainees. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations.

Position Duties

The tasks below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Observes work area and activities and reports/responds to any unusual or abnormal inmate behaviors or physical conditions; counsels inmates.
  • Maintains security and accountability for tools, equipment, and facility keys.
  • Accurately records and documents all required information pertaining to logs including but not limited to housing, 15 minute watch, single cell restriction, restraint, and confinement logs.
  • Conducts a variety of searches/inspections of individuals, materials and facilities for contraband, evidence, escape attempts, unauthorized articles, weapons, evidence of unauthorized activities, and rule infractions.
  • Provides direct supervision and documentation of inmates and their movement within the housing areas of the facility, secure perimeter or while transporting including verifying accurate identification and counts.
  • Controls, subdues, and restrains inmates by the use of proper restraining hold or device without causing undue pain or injury.
  • Responds in a timely manner to inmate requests for medical treatment and monitors the health and welfare of all inmates as assigned. Renders emergency first aid as required.
  • Responds to an escape or attempted escape by sealing off potential escape routes and uses the minimum amount of force required to stop the escapee(s) while maintaining control and custody of other inmates. Sound the alarm and report escape or attempted escape as soon as possible to the control room.
  • Resolves disruptive behavior by appropriate verbal orders, use of disciplinary procedures or appropriate use of force when needed. Must be able to defend themself, defend others or otherwise gain control of a physically resistant inmate..
  • Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Special Certifications and licenses
  • Certification by Florida Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission as a Corrections Officer.
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver's License (must maintain for duration of employment)

Additional Information

  • Must be able to work day or night, weekends or holidays, any shift, any day of the week
  • Must be able to respond to the jail, to include routine days off and remain on site during significant emergency situations such as hurricanes, disturbances or other natural disasters.
