The Opportunity:
  WSDOT has a great career opportunity for a Maintenance professional who wants to continue to grow and share their leadership skills and has a passion for bridges. The incumbent will work to program, supervise and schedule bridge maintenance crews in their nightly operations around the Northwest Region. This includes but not limited to safety of highway and water traffic. In cases of accidents, renders assistance and controls traffic until arrival of law enforcement agencies. The main goal of this position is to help keep our bridges operating properly, assuring safety for travelers. 

 
To be successful in this job you must be able to successfully supervise bridge maintenance crews and repairs on 1,400 fixed span bridges region wide.  In addition, you must address safety in everything you do while working in areas of high traffic volumes while performing normal job functions.
 
This is a night shift and the schedule for this position 8:00pm – 6:30am (located at the Renton office).  This position is eligible for an additional $3.00 per hour for permanent night shift duty.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Determine the type and priority of work to be performed; supervise and direct night crew regarding all repairs
  • Determine the safety level and equipment needed and ensure staff are trained and prepared in proper use of equipment
  • Work as a team with other WSDOT staff and other stakeholders to resolve complaints and prioritize work activities
  • Inspect bridge structures up to 100ft. to determine needs for repairs or replacement of parts.
  • Analyze emergency situations and make recommendations as to the level of the emergency and how to proceed.
  • Prepare estimates for repairs and modifications to work with management and maintenance crews in planning of projects
  • Prepare and maintain records and estimates
  • Purchase and requisition supplies, material, and equipment; assist in yearly planning and budgeting
  • Other duties as assigned
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have: 
  • One (1) year as a Maintenance Supervisor; OR three (3) years of experience as a Maintenance Lead Technician (on a bridge crew); OR four (4) years of experience as a Maintenance Technician 2 Bridge (with experience filling in as a lead); OR equivalent experience in the associated trades of mechanical, electrical, automated electronic controllers, hydraulic systems with additional experience working with wood, concrete, and steel fabrication required
  • Five (5) years full-time experience as a journey trades worker, or equivalent in a trade such as electrical, concrete, welding, framing, steel, mechanical, plumbing, etc. College-level course work in a trade may be substituted, year for year, for up to two years of work experience
  • One (1) year, full time experience as a lead worker or supervisor
  • Knowledge/experience with Maintenance Productivity Enhancement Tool (MPET)    
  • Experience planning and scheduling work with an aptitude for and interest in understanding the budget process and executing budget related tasks.
  • Strong understanding of repairs to railings, decks, columns, piers, and expansion joints.  Repairs to steel railings, portals and sways.
  • Ability and willingness to work permanent nights, weekends, holidays, and to perform emergency callouts.
  • Experience in traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs, and flagging.
  • Proven time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering and construction plans.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
  • Intermediate-level ability to operate hand-held data collectors, digital cameras, laptop computers, GPS, and software associated with the M&O Programs (such as Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A required
  • High school diploma or GED.
 
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
