The Opportunity:
WSDOT has an outstanding entry OR experienced-level opportunity in our Northwest Region – King Area Traffic group. This position will have an opportunity to dive into traffic analysis, design, and traffic operations. They will have a key role in analyzing a wide variety of traffic related materials to help advocate for the best engineering solutions.
 
Candidates should demonstrate a proven background in written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and prioritizing their work. Whether just out of school or a seasoned professional, successful candidates will be challenged with the analysis, design, and operations of WSDOT's state highways.
 
Engineers in King Area Traffic impact one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. Successful candidates will influence the next generation of transportation in Seattle and King County and help maintain safety and mobility not only in the growing rural areas but also on major corridors like I-405, SR 520, and I-5.
 
This position will also perform the following work:
 

  • Perform detailed capacity, operational, and safety analysis for freeways and highways as part of performance measurement efforts, project planning, construction mitigation, roadway safety assessment and estimation of construction impacts
  • Review traffic related portions of roadway performance studies, Traffic Impact Analyses, Transportation Discipline Reports, and Environmental Impact Statements
  • Respond to inquiries regarding traffic operational performance and work with WSDOT Communications for traffic impact outreach
  • Utilize traffic modeling applications such as VISSIM, Synchro, Sidra, and HCS to review models developed by our partners
  • Review conceptual or design plans and provide constructive feedback
  • Prepare documentation of findings and materials for presentations
  • Communicate and coordinate work activities with co-workers, managers, supervisor, and partner agencies
  • Perform highway operational reviews and recommend improvement actions
  • Other duties as assigned

An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related field and the ability to obtain a Washington State Engineer In-Training credential (EIT) within a 1 year probationary period required
  • Master or Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License
  • Excellent analytical skills with experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication to clearly convey technical topics for both engineers and general audiences.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to traffic standards, policies and guidelines
  • Ability to quickly grasp new software and modeling tools; prior work or educational experience with traffic modeling software is a plus
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team and interact in a professional and courteous manner with the public
  • Valid Driver's license required
 
Entry-level candidates are eligible for an in-training position that offers a career path and ample on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Transportation Engineering series with the goal of becoming a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2 position depending on their qualifications. The salary levels for each position are:
 
Transportation Engineer 1: $50,292-$67,584
Transportation Engineer 2: $55,476-$74,604

Note:
 
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
