Examples of Duties

Desirable Experience: Experience in processing and determining Veterans Claims/Benefits.

Desirable Education: Equivalent to the completion of two (2) years of college.


Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, administer, and carry out a program of veterans services under the guidelines of federal and state agencies.
               
    •Assist the department in selection, promotion, evaluation and termination of professional staff.
               
    •Provide training and staff development.
               
    •Interview, counsel and advise veterans and/or dependents on available financial, educational, vocational, legal and medical rights and benefits.
               
    •Assist veterans and their dependents in the initiation, development, and processing of claims for disability compensation, pensions, insurance benefits, vocational rehabilitation, hospitalization, medical care, loan guarantee benefits, and civil service benefits.
               
    •Procure necessary information and affidavits to support claims.
               
    •Provide instruction, guidance and technical advice to other employees and reviews their work for adequacy and accuracy.
               
    •Enter veteran/claimant data into computer system to establish a data base for the system.
               
    •Disseminate information on veteran's service programs and procedures to individuals and organizations.
               
    •Prepare required reports; reviews and analyzes legislation and regulations, advising the department of its potential impact.
     

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:
At least five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the system for which the specific department is requesting.

Education:
Formal, advanced educational training in system of expertise is highly desirable.

FAMILY CARE LEAVE

Family Care Leave applies to all employees who work 1250 or more hours in any twelve month period.

HEALTH PLANS AND LIFE INSURANCE

Extra-help employees are not entitled to County-paid medical, dental, vision, life insurance, Employee Assistance Program benefits and are not eligible to participate in the Deferred Compensation Plan.

JURY DUTY

Extra-help employees are not entitled to pay or receive reimbursement from the County for Jury Duty.

PAID TIME BENEFITS

Extra-help employees are not entitled to paid bereavement, vacation, or holidays.

PAID SICK LEAVE
Extra-help employees are entitled to accrue up to three (3) paid sick days (24 hours) in a 12-month period.

SOCIAL SECURITY

Extra-help employment earnings are not covered under Social Security. Merced County provides an alternate plan - Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) - for extra-help employees who are otherwise not eligible for participation in the County's retirement system.

 COMPENSATION/UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE:

The County does provide benefits to those eligible under the State Workers Compensation and Unemployment Insurance statutes.
