Do you want to utilize your driving skills to help ensure that local students on a bus arrive to school, field trips and athletics events in a safe manner? If so, the Department of Public Transportation's School Bus Driver position may be the right career for you!

Department of Public Transportation.
 Full time position with benefits.  Preferred starting hourly rate: $13.90/hour.  Minimum of 5 hours per day/180 days per year. Additional hours available. Responsible for driving the school bus and picking up and delivering students to/from school. Performs pre-trip inspection of the school bus; reports operating and equipment deficiencies; cleans bus inside; fuels bus; maintains discipline on the bus; ensures passenger safety and transports students to special events and field trips, as necessary. Requires knowledge of City of Harrisonburg street locations and skill in the safe operation of a school bus. Abilities to: assist children using patience and understanding; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, the general public, associates and students.

Position will begin as part-time without benefits from June 2018 to August 2018 in order to provide training opportunities for selected candidates.  Position will change to full-time status in August 2018 once the school year begins and routes will be assigned at that time.  Full-time benefits will be available based upon the full-time status effective date.

Physical Requirements: This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions. 

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and some experience operating buses or similar equipment and in dealing with the public, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Special requirements: Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of VA. Must pass VA DOE physical examination. Incumbent subject to criminal background check, alcohol and controlled substances testing as required by the VA DOT and subject to VA DMV records review.
