Position Summary

Churchill County is accepting applications for the part-time position of Office Intern at the Churchill County Justice Court, with the successful applicant starting around the middle of August.  These positions are established to give high school and college students employment opportunities where they can learn a variety of job skills in an office environment.  Positions typically become available from time to time in the following offices: Assessor, District Attorney, Social Services, Clerk/Treasurer, and Justice Court.  Openings may occur in other offices as well.  When positions become open, the applications that have been submitted for this posting may also be placed under consideration for those other openings.  

For this position for the Justice Court, Office Interns must be available several days per week between the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM, for a total of 10-14 hours per week.  This is not just summer work - we are looking for candidates who are committed to work throughout the school year.  Interested applicants need to apply online at www.churchillcounty.org/careers

POSITION SUMMARY:
Beginning with close supervision and moving on to being under general supervision, performs a broad range of staff support and/or clerical activities and runs office errands. 
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is an entry-level position, usually filled by high school or college students who are seeking to acquire work experience and additional job knowledge.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Delivers and picks up documents from various locations; runs errands as needed for the department or county.
  • Establishes and maintains office files; researches and compiles information from such files; purges files as required.
  • Opens and distributes mail, processes outgoing mail; photocopies documents for staff.
  • Enters, edits and retrieves data and prepares reports, using a computer system and following established formats and menus; scans documents into a computer system.
  • Acts as receptionist, as directed, and receives and screens visitors and telephone calls and takes messages; provides basic factual information regarding County or departmental activities and functions.
  • Cleans office areas, kitchen areas, department vehicles, etc. as directed; organizes storage areas.
  • Operates standard office equipment, including word processors, computers, scanners, facsimile equipment and central telephones; may operate microfilm, radio telephone and other departmental-specific equipment after training.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
 
Education and Experience:
Some exposure or experience in an office setting is desirable; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:

  • Policies and procedures of the department to which assigned.
  • Use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation.
  • Business arithmetic.
  • Office administrative practices and procedures.
  • Business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials.
  • Record keeping principles and practices.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Techniques for dealing with the public, in person and over the telephone.
 
Skill in:
  • Performing administrative support work in assigned of areas/disciplines.
  • Reading and explaining rules, policies and procedures.
  • Organizing, maintaining and researching office files.
  • Compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or department goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, and the public.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
  • Nevada Class C Driver's License may be required for some positions.

Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; stamina to sit for extended periods of time; strength and agility to lift and carry up to 20 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate over the telephone and in person; exposure to traffic conditions and external environment when traveling from one office to another.        

Benefits for casual employees are limited to social security and Medicare contributions.  Employees are required to pay their portion of the social security and Medicare contributions.
