This position, under general direction of the Day Camp Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor, performs, assists and leads a variety of child care activities for the Golden Parks and Recreation Department's Day Camp Program for children 5-15 years of age. 

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of childcare duties to include planning, organizing, guiding, implementing classes, activities and special events on a daily basis. Under guidance of supervisor, assists and instructs camp participants as needed.

Drives van for field trips. (Applicable to those ages 21 and older that meet qualifications).

Follows and enforces all department and camp policies, rules, and regulations while maintaining a friendly and professional attitude. Provides a safe camp environment.

Maintains cleanliness of facility and organization of materials and equipment in accordance with Colorado Department of Human Services Rules Regulating School-Age Child Care Centers and Golden Parks and Recreation Department's policies.

Communicates with parents and staff to provide information about camp activities and camper successes and problems while maintaining a friendly and professional attitude.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire. High school diploma or general education diploma (GED). Three months of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable work experience with school-age children in such areas as camps, day care, recreation 4H education, scouts, and/or sports. Must be able to swim. Prior leadership experience involving organizational skills is highly desired.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Child and Adult CPR certification and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire.
Must obtain a certification in Standard Precautions within 30 days of hire.
May be required to obtain a Medication Administration certification within 30 days of hire.
Must pass a State of Colorado sexual abuse background check and a CBI finger print criminal.

Driving Positions - Must be 21 years of age with a valid driver's license and a good driving record. Must pass the City of Golden van driving test upon hire if 21 years and older.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, community organizations, the public, and participants. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
 
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to make sound judgments, exercise conflict resolution techniques and patience when dealing with stressful disciplinary situations.
  
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent customer service and childcare skills are imperative. Ability to interact with different age and interest groups and handle several activities and multiple tasks. Must make independent decisions and the ability to complete projects with minimal supervision.
 
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
Computer (including word, excel), phone, walkie / talkie, copier, printer, fax, playground equipment, sports, and children's equipment.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.   Duties require moderate movement and physical effort; discomforts and hazards are minor and controllable. Must be able to swim.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions during summer months. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
