ELEVATE TO EL DORADO

The County of El Dorado is conducting a recruitment to fill one (1) extra help vacancy in the Health and Human Services Agency in Placerville, CA. While extra help positions vary, this specific vacancy is anticipated to work approximately 24 hours/weekIt will also establish a list which may be used up to three months, to fill future full time, part time and extra help vacancies throughout the County.

Extra help vacancies are recurrent openings, made to maintain adequate coverage of work for short periods of time at frequent intervals, where employment is of a recurrent nature depending on the needs of the Agency; work may be seasonal, on-call, and/or for a limited duration.

A Training and Experience evaluation may be utilized to determine an applicant's ranking for referral to specific vacancies.  Based upon the information and materials provided in the application, the applicant's education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, plans, performs and directs occupational therapy for handicapped persons, primarily children, and participates as a team member with physicians, physical therapists, parents and others in furthering the development of the child's daily living habits.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a skilled professional class responsible for evaluating the special needs of handicapped children and developing occupational therapy programs to assist in their development. This class is distinguished from Physical Therapist in that the latter provides physical therapy to assist with the child's neuro-muscular development.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Plans, organizes and participates in occupational and recreational activities to further the development of a child's daily living habits.
  • Consults with physicians to determine appropriate types of occupational therapy for the mental and physical improvement of patients; administers diagnostic and prognostic tests.
  • Recommends constructive activities suited to patient's physical capacity, intelligence level, interest and desired results.
  • Instruct patients in creative arts, educational subjects, prevocational subjects and recreational activities.
  • Instructs patients in methods of accomplishing daily living habits; helps them learn to feed themselves, use bathroom facilities, dress, bathe, write, play and interact with their peers and adults.
  • Conducts individual and group sessions to help children feel less restricted in their environment; to learn additional leisure time activities, to learn how to cook, do laundry and take care of themselves.
  • Determines need for and fit of adaptive equipment, such as wheelchairs, adaptive inserts, braces and splints; provides adaptive equipment selection, fabrication and maintenance.
  • Observes and makes verbal and written documentation of patient progress.
  • Assists in educating school personnel, public health personnel and other interested groups in order to understand and cooperate in the physical and psychological objectives of occupational therapy treatments.
  • Participates in staff conferences and team meetings involving educational personnel, welfare services, physical therapists vendors and speech therapists to further the child's development.
  • Makes on-site visits to homes and schools to identify improvements in the physical setting that can be made to make a more adaptive environment for the child.
  • Maintains accurate records and case note; prepares treatment plans, correspondence another written materials.
  • Attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements (typing "See Resume" in application will not be accepted)

Experience: One year of credentialed experience performing occupational therapy with children.

Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess a valid certificate from the National Registry of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of arts, crafts and recreational activities commonly used in occupational therapy.
  • Theory of mental and physical rehabilitation underlying the practice of occupational therapy.
  • Neuro-muscular function anatomy.
  • Skeletal and muscular anatomy.
  • Psychological problems of the handicapped and their families.
  • Use and care of special tools, prostheses and equipment.
  • Basic recordkeeping principles.
Skill in:
  • Instructing and assisting with therapeutic activities.
  • Explaining and interpreting tests, diagnoses, objectives and methods of occupational therapy to patients, parents and school personnel.
  • Working as a team member to ensure carryover in the treatment and training of patients.
  • Integrating occupational therapy activities with other medial and developmental programs.
  • Preparing accurate and complete case notes, correspondence, reports and other written materials.
  • Exercising initiative and sound judgment within established guidelines.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Environment: Work is primarily performed indoors in a standard office setting.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting and operate office equipment; vision in the normal visual range with or without correction sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment; hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Frequent sitting; wrist and arm motions and upward/downward flexion of neck; fine finger dexterity of both hands, ability to grasp and hold. Occasional standing and bending, walking and reaching; lifting, carrying or pushing objects that weigh up to 16 lbs. Infrequent climbing; lifting, carrying or pushing objects that weigh more than 16 lbs..
