The Position

The City of Vacaville is currently recruiting to fill vacancies for part-time* LABORERS in the Public Works Department.   
 
Laborers perform maintenance work in our Public Works Maintenance Division. Positions in this classification may work in either the park, street, facility, field utilities, or garage maintenance operations, as well as in the Central Warehouse.

Duties may include, but are not limited, to:

  • Loading and unloading materials and equipment;
  • Digging and covering holes and trenches; maintaining and repairing sewer and water lines, streets, and storm drains;
  • Operating weed-eaters, lawn mowers, and other power tools; driving trucks;
  • Cleaning and servicing equipment; cleaning buildings and parks.

*Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month.  Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits, and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (24 hours per year).

 

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:

Education:    High school diploma or equivalent is highly desirable.

Experience:   Experience in landscape or construction maintenance is highly desirable.

License:    Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. 

Other:  Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire in order to drive a vehicle for City business and operate power tools.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be physically capable of sustained standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, and squatting. The work has a lifting requirement that may range from 40-100 pounds, depending on the area of assignment. Laborers work outside with exposure to weather, odors, dust, and pollen. The work requires the ability to hear and distinguish various sounds, such as alarms and sounds of operating equipment in both quiet and noisy environments; the ability to see well enough to read documents and instructions; and hand and finger dexterity sufficient to use small tools.

The Selection Process

The most qualified applicants, based on a review of the employment application and attachments, may be invited to the examination process. The examination will consist of a physical performance test and an oral interview. The process will evaluate the following areas:

Knowledge of: Standard tools and equipment associated with the work described above and knowledge of safe work practices.

Ability to: Safely use standard tools and equipment associated with the work described above; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to keep accurate records; and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Applicants receiving a conditional offer of employment must successfully complete the pre-placement process for this position before a final offer will be extended.  Pre-placement assessments for this position include a Livescan (FBI/DOJ fingerprint review), DMV record review, drug screen and medical exam.

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month*.  Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits (including CalPERS membership), and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (24 hours per year).
 
Part-time positions are not covered by Social Security and are not eligible for the City of Vacaville's retirement plan through CalPERS and are therefore required to make 7.5% pre-tax contributions into a qualified plan under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA).  For the City of Vacaville, the plan is a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Nationwide Retirement Systems, Inc.
