The Michigan Legislature is seeking a talented software developer to join a team that is building a new legislative information system to be utilized by the House of Representatives, Senate, and Legislative Service Bureau. This position will utilize the latest technology and development tools and be part of a collaborative team that is shaping the way the product is built.

This individual will work with a contracted software vendor to design, implement, test, and deploy a technical solution for a project that is critical to the work of the Michigan Legislature and legislative processes. Duties include solving complex technical challenges in the existing legacy system and for the new software solution. Due to onsite team collaboration, remote work is not an option.

Position Description

Job Responsibilities:
  • Plan, design, develop, debug, implement and support customized browser based application based on Aurelia, JavaScript, Python and Django
  • Modify existing platform to correct errors, improve performance and enhance functionality
  • Adhere to and recommend improvements to project coding standards
  • Work in a team environment with shared code; disciplined use of Git and process documentation

Required Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience
  • Thorough knowledge of complex application design required
  • Knowledge of how to build and use RESTful APIs
  • Interest and ability to learn other programming languages as needed
  • Very strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong knowledge of software best practices (Object-Oriented design, patterns, algorithms, data structures)
  • Experience with software development product life cycles from concept to development and product testing and final release
DESIRED QUALITIES
  • Strong development background in C# and Visual Studio
  • Experience in Visual Studio Tool for Office (VSTO)
  • Strong experience in MS Word/MS Word API and MSDN Libraries
  • Self-starter and desire to work in team environment
  • Knowledge of the legislative process desired, but not required
  • Desire to learn and adapt quickly a necessity

The MiLENIA System Division is responsible for the development and maintenance of the windows and web based applications that are used by the Michigan Legislature to draft legislation, manage legislative workflow, and maintain the legislative portal.

This position is an unclassified, non-Civil Service position in the Legislative Branch of State government. Employees are considered "at-will," with the exception of LSB Printing Division union members. Legislative Council employees must be nonpartisan.


This position is located in Boji Tower, 124 W. Allegan Street, Lansing, MI. The work hours for this position are 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
