Description

This position is responsible for enforcing the Henry County, Georgia animal control codes and ordinances.  The work involves responding to calls concerning stray, dangerous, injured or deceased animals, investigating complaints, and driving the animal control truck to various county destinations.

Work is performed in accordance with the County Animal Control Ordinances, state laws, and verbal and written county and department standard operating procedures.

The incumbent for this position will be on a set rotation on-call to include: After-hours, weekends and holidays.

Preference given to candidate who live in Henry County or within close proximity due to the fact of mandatory on call rotation schedules.

Examples of Duties

Enforces animal control laws of the County, and responds to calls including, but not limited to, animals at large, cruelty to animals, dangerous/vicious dogs, and animal bites; advises the general public concerning the animal control ordinances and related laws, rules and regulations; issues warnings/citations to animal owners found in violation of the animal control ordinance; serves and responds to Court summonses as necessary and represents the Department at Court hearings; removes deceased animals under 100 pounds from County maintained roads, transports animals to the shelter or veterinarian as necessary; humanely euthanizes animals in the shelter when needed, using establish protocols; assists with the care, feeding, and maintenance of animals in the shelter as needed; performs related duties as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from High school or GED equivalent

 
One (1) year of experience in animal control work, as a veterinarian's assistant, or prior history of working with animals preferred.
 
Able to consistently lift 50 pounds.
 
Must possess a valid Georgia driver's license.
 
Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Knowledge, Skill, Abilities/ Supplemental Information

Knowledge of laws and ordinances governing animal protection and animal control; knowledge of effective and humane methods of controlling and containing domestic animals; knowledge of state, county, and department policies, procedures, and techniques of animal control; knowledge of proper drug dosages required to tranquilize and/or euthanize animals; knowledge of the geography of Henry County; skill in preparation and maintenance of records and documentation; skill in oral and written communication; skill in the use and operation of specialized equipment to capture and immobilize animals; including dart-guns, syringes, needles, tranquilizers and euthanasia solution, two-way radio, telephone and truck; ability to deal professionally and courteously with the public; ability to operate vehicle safely; ability to use a vehicle to pull a livestock trailer; ability to handle animals safely and effectively.

Annual Leave

Annual Leave (vacation) is earned as follows:

  • 0 months – 5 years: 10 days per year
  • 6 years – 15 years: 15 days per year
  • 16 years – 20 years: 20 days per year
  • 21 years and over: 23 days per year

Sick Leave is earned at the rate of one day per month for a total of 12 days per year.

Employees receive nine paid holidays per year.

Insurance benefits are offered to employees working over 32 hours per week.

New employees are eligible for insurance coverage on the first day of the month following one full month of employment.
