Job Description

Under general supervision of a Mental Health Program Coordinator and in clinical collaboration with the Medical Director and/or Staff Psychiatrist, provides a full spectrum of psychiatric care to consumers, assessing, diagnosing, and managing the prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders, mental health problems and substance use disorders. Provides comprehensive consumer-centered mental health care to consumers. Performs psychiatric evaluation, biopsychosocial assessment, diagnosis, and management, including medication management of consumers with mental illness.

This is a full-time, benefited position working at the Community Mental Health (Fulton Street) building in Grand Haven, MI.  Travel to other county locations and buildings, as needed. 

Essential Job Functions

The qualified candidate will possess the abilities to perform the essential job functions including, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides assessment and comprehensive management of common and complex psychiatric conditions and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Assesses the impact of consumer medical conditions on psychiatric status and vice versa and tailors medical management to the lifestyle risks of consumers presenting with mental illness and co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders.
  • Performs diagnostic assessments, including DSM 5 diagnosis and recommendations, for consumers beginning psychiatric medication regimens.
  • Collects data from multiple sources using assessment techniques that are appropriate to the consumer's language, culture, and developmental stage, including, but not limited to, screening evaluations, psychiatric rating scales, and other standardized instruments.
  • Differentiates psychiatric presentations of medical conditions from psychiatric disorders and arranges appropriate evaluation and follow-up.
  • Diagnoses psychiatric and substance use disorders.
  • Differentiates between exacerbation and reoccurrence of a chronic psychiatric disorder and signs and symptoms of a new mental health problem or a new medical or psychiatric disorder.
  • Develops a treatment plan for mental health problems and psychiatric disorders based on biopsychosocial theories, evidence-based standards of care, and practice guidelines.
  • Prescribes and manages psychotropic medication regimens.
  • Educates consumers regarding prescribed medications, their illnesses and the interaction of medications within their body as one integrated system.
  • Provides clinical consultation to Ottawa County Community Mental Health Clinicians.
  • Participates in psychiatric peer review system and prescriber meetings.
  • Participates with therapists, specialists, and clinicians in developing, reviewing, and modifying individual consumer treatment plans to improve individual behaviors and life skills.
  • Records consumer and treatment data in case notes, and ensures that consumer case records are properly documented and that confidentiality of consumer information is maintained.
  • Responds to emergencies within regularly scheduled clinic hours.
  • Ensures that service delivery to consumers complies with CMH standard operating policies and procedures, Title X, Medicaid Manual for Providers, Michigan Mental Health Code (PA 258 of 1974), Michigan Department of Health and Human Services rules and regulations and Self-determination Initiative, and CARF accreditation rules, regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains case documentation and case notes, and ensures the security and integrity of private health information in compliance with the provisions of HIPAA and County and CMH policies and procedures.
  • Prepares all documentation and reports required to maintain compliance with Recipients' Rights rules and regulations.
  • Provides information about mental health services and makes presentations to members of the community and the general public.
  • Coordinates closely with primary care physicians and other community prescribers to ensure seamless care to consumers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

Master's Degree in Nursing (M.S.N.) from an accredited college or university in psychiatric nursing and five (5) years of progressively responsible and demonstrably successful experience in advanced psychiatric nursing practice, including at least two (2) years in the pharmacological management of psychiatric disorders. Must comply with all continuing education requirements for continued certification and licensure.

Additional Requirements and Information

Licenses and Certifications:

  1. Certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Specialist and/or Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  2. State of Michigan Licensed Registered Nurse with Nurse Practitioner specialty certification.
  3. Federal controlled substance registration with DEA number.
  4. Valid Michigan drivers' license

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: 
Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances, and devices to increase mobility.  Work is generally performed in a normal office environment.  Delivery of nursing care to consumers may entail exposure to a variety of disease vectors and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
