Job Description

Under the direction of the Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH) Epidemiologist, performs analysis and develops reports on various population health projects involving infectious diseases and local youth and adult risk behavior surveys. Meets with stakeholders and staff in public health to collaborate on and review project needs.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, paid internship position working from the Public Health Department in Holland, MI. College students are encouraged to apply. The position will work 32 - 40 hours per week through the end of August 2018.  A flexible schedule is possible, at times, but the intern would need to have the ability to work between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Essential Job Functions

The majority of the internship will be spent in the office using Excel, SAS and other tools to clean and analyze public health data from electronic disease surveillance systems and from established survey databases. Duties are performed with limited supervision.

Other duties may include developing public reports of epidemiological findings with assistance from the Epidemiologist and the OCDPH Communications Specialist, presenting findings to internal and external stakeholders, developing and maintaining project guides and providing assistance on other public health data projects.

Required Education, Training and Experience

Possession of a Bachelor's Degree and post-graduate courses in statistics, biostatistics, public health, epidemiology or other closely related areas of study.

  • Ethical conduct in public health practice and data use.

  • Report development skills.
  • Communication and presentation skills.
  • Cultural competency skills.
  • Some proficiency in SAS.
