Primary Objective

Under direction, conducts community outreach activities which support Park District efforts to increase public understanding and awareness of outdoor recreation and education opportunities to diverse populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordinates efforts for each outreach event by driving the "Parks on the Go" van to and from the event, working with staff to set up and take down equipment and displays, interacting with event participants, and answering questions and providing information related to Park District facilities, programs and opportunities. 
 
Plans and facilitates basic nature-based programming and activities, including:

  • Recreation activities such as disc golf, geocaching, slacklining, and camping skills
  • Arts-based programming such as ink printing, nature photo scavenger hunts, and animal puppet shows
  • Outdoor education programming such as plant identification, birding, bug catching, and animal explorations
  • Food and nutrition activities such as seed planting and compost education
 
Communicates with staff and volunteers prior to each event to ensure event team is aware of location, time, and other event specifics.  Works with Community Engagement Coordinator to ensure that Commissioners and Foundation members are aware of the specifics of each event. 
 
Prepares for each assigned outreach event by ensuring the van is clean, fueled, and stocked with information, brochures, and equipment necessary for the event.

Contacts supervisor regarding resolution of any "day of" issues or requests involving the van or "Parks on the Go" activities. 

Develops and conducts additional community engagement and outreach activities and programs, as directed, to increase awareness of outdoor recreation and education opportunities and Park District facilities among diverse populations and communities.

Contributes to the ongoing evaluation of the "Parks on the Go" program and makes  adjustments as needed.

Performs other related work as apparent or assigned.

Qualifications

Starting Wage: Starting wage up to $14.00/hr, depending on qualifications.

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED plus at least one year of experience or related training.  Bachelor's degree in youth development, education, public health, environmental science, outdoor recreation or related fields or education and experience equivalent to the degree preferred.  Working knowledge of and the ability to apply various teaching techniques.  Must be at least 18 years of age.  Valid Minnesota Class D Driver License upon appointment.
 
Other Skills and Abilities
Must have a demonstrated interest in a variety of program areas and to view aspects of recreational and outdoor educational opportunities through the perspective of a wide variety of individuals.  Must be willing to participate fully in the Park District's "commitment to quality visitor service."  Working knowledge of office equipment including word processors, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, databases, and ability to learn selected computer management applications.  Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other Park District personnel, community groups, affiliated agencies, and the general public.  As required must be able to travel to Park District facilities, properties, and meeting locations to conduct on-site work in a timely manner. Must be able to drive a large vehicle and trailer to Park District facilities and community events.
 
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write basic reports and professional correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, park guests, and the general public. Fluency in Hmong, Somali, or Spanish is a plus, but not required.
 
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.  Ability to work with budgets.
 
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and quickly problem solve as situations and environments unexpectedly change. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
 
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, to manipulate controls, equipment, and recreation material.  The employee will  be required to traverse uneven terrain as well as paved and unpaved trails.  The employee is often required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee needs the ability to perform physical requirements of various outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, canoeing, biking, fishing, archery, and camping.  The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
 
Work Environment
While performing the duties of the job the employee is frequently required to work in outdoor weather conditions, being exposed to hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, direct sunlight, dust, and pollen.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Selection Procedure

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of relevant experience and training. A top group of applicants will be invited to participate in further job screening. 
 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a background investigation including a criminal history search. Costs of the background will be paid for by Three Rivers Park District.  
 

Part-time Non-benefited and seasonal staff receive all legally mandated benefits such as worker’s compensation insurance and Social Security, but are ineligible for all other benefit programs.

Payroll Banking and Direct Deposit
Payroll banking via direct deposit is available to employees. In addition membership in the City/County Credit Union is also available. Enrollment information will be available at your orientation.

Complimentary Passes
A Recreation Activity Pass is available to provide employee access to some Park District recreational facilities for which a user fee is charged.
