The City of Pasadena, Public Works Department is seeking a Street Light and Signal Repairer to install, maintain, repair street lighting and traffic signals, mechanical, electrical, and control equipment.

The current vacancies are in our Street Maintenance and Integrated Waste Management Division in the Public Works Department.

IDEAL CANDIDATE 
The ideal candidate for the Street Light and Signal Repairer must be able to work independently, possess extensive electrical and signal cabinet experience (type 332), have construction background particularly in placement of foundations, reliable, demonstrate good problem solving skills, excellent verbal communication, and boundless energy, as well as a strong work ethic.

Essential Functions

  • Performs street light maintenance including high voltage series circuits, routine trouble repairs, including lamp and socket replacement; 
  • Digs trenches, jacks conduit underground; digs holes and pours concrete bases for signal standards;
  • Installs street light and traffic signal standards and heads and pulls in and splices wires to install, replace, and repair damaged traffic signal and street standards;
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and electronic traffic control equipment;
  • Performs field inspection cleaning, oiling, and adjusting electronic control equipment.

Qualification Guidelines

COMPETENCIES

  • Functional knowledge of tools, test equipment and basic materials and methods used in street light and traffic signal repair.
  • Problem solving ability when repairing and installing street light and traffic signal circuitry.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relations with a variety of citizens and City staff.
  • Communication skills to express thoughts effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Safety focus when using physical strength and agility to lift up to 85 pounds, bending in all directions; climbing ladders and poles, operating machinery using hands and legs, and working outdoors in all kinds of weather

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance would qualify.
  • Completion of an approved on-the-job training program and a minimum of two years experience in street light and/or traffic signal maintenance are required.
  • Must have a valid Class B California Driver's License at time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Certification from the Pasadena Water and Power Department for underground electrical work must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period.
SELECTION PROCESS
 
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in either a written, oral, or performance examination.

Probationary work period is one year.

Special Requirements

May be required to work swing shifts, weekends, respond to emergency calls and participate in an emergency standby program. Enrollment in college-level courses of Basic Electricity and Electronics, Street Light and Traffic Signal Circuitry I and II within six months of appointment will be required 

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.
