JOB SUMMARY

Open until filled - 6 positions. 
Lifeguards will work up to 40 hours per week from July 1 through Labor Day, September 3, 12PM - 8PM, weekends included.


Under the supervision of the Beach Supervisor, monitor public activities and ensure public safety at the beaches of Harry Todd and American Lake parks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide a safe environment for the public; supervise swimmers; render assistance, first-aid and/or CPR to accident and injury victims; rescue persons in distress.
Maintain order and discipline; enforce established rules.
Monitor aquatic activities; ensure activities are proper and appropriate.
Maintain aquatic equipment in good working order; ensure beach area is kept neat, clean and litter free.
Inspect lifesaving equipment daily and make necessary repairs.
Provide information to the public concerning aquatic program policies, regulations and schedules; answer participant inquiries in-person and over the telephone.
Restrict swimmers to the boundary lines of the swimming area.
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 16 years of age and have prior experience lifeguarding or teaching in the aquatic field.
Must possess current American Red Cross certifications: Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional Rescuer OR equivalent.
Must pass an in water skills test.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
General rules, regulations, practices, and terminology of aquatic activities.
Requirements of operating recreational facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Oral and written communication skills.
First-aid and CPR procedures.
Working effectively and successfully to ensure the safety of others.
Proper lifesaving equipment and its use.
Water lifesaving skills.
Techniques of life guarding.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Respond effectively to emergency situations, and apply first-aid/CPR when necessary.
Establish rapport, maintain cooperative working relationships with all user populations including youth, adults, and seniors.
Acquire a sense of responsibility and mental alertness.
Be focused and alert so as to prevent hazardous situations.

Communicate effectively with staff and the general public about the City's aquatics program.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Perform custodial and light maintenance duties.
Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or special events as required.

ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor beach environment subject to sun exposure, noise and distractions. Variable work schedule, including evenings and weekends.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical agility and stamina; lifting, walking, and overall physical movement; carrying, pushing or pulling; heavy lifting up to 100 pounds; sitting and standing for extended periods of time; vision to monitor individual activities and read program materials; and hearing and speaking to exchange information with others.

All temporary and seasonal workers with the City are employed at will.  Either party may terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without cause, and for any lawful reason or for no reason.

Paid interns shall receive holiday pay. Employees in grant funded positions are eligible for paid holidays if specified in the grant.

Temporary and seasonal employees are not eligible for any other benefits except those mandated by law, such as paid sick leave, workers' compensation, and unemployment coverage.
