JOB SUMMARY

Open until filled - 4 positions.
Senior Lifeguards will work from 32 - 40 hours per week from July 1 through Labor Day, September 3, 12PM - 8PM, weekends included.


Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, serve as a lead to Lifeguards and perform periodic training and skills development; monitor public activities and ensure public safety at the beaches of Harry Todd and American Lake parks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Serve as a lead to Lifeguards and provide periodic training and skills development; recommend staffing changes.
Provide a safe environment for the public; supervise swimmers; render assistance, first-aid and/or CPR to accident and injury victims; rescue persons in distress.
Maintain order and discipline; enforce established rules.
Monitor aquatic activities; ensure activities are proper and appropriate.
Ensure beach area is kept neat, clean and litter free.
Inspect lifesaving equipment daily and make necessary repairs.
Restrict swimmers to the boundary lines of the swimming area.
Warn swimmers of unseen hazards. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must have prior experience lifeguarding or teaching in the aquatic field.
Must possess current American Red Cross certifications:  Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional Rescuer OR equivalent.
Must pass an in water skills test.

General rules, regulations, practices, and terminology of aquatic activities.
Requirements of operating recreational facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Oral and written communication skills.
First-aid and CPR procedures.
Working effectively and successfully to ensure the safety of others.
Proper lifesaving equipment and its use.
Water lifesaving skills.
Techniques of lifeguarding.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Group dynamics and effectively working with people.
Principles and practices of supervision and training.

ABILITY TO:
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Respond effectively to emergency situations, and apply first-aid/CPR when necessary.
Establish rapport, maintain cooperative working relationships with all user populations including youth, adults, and seniors.
Be focused and alert so as to prevent hazardous situations.
Communicate effectively with staff and the general public about the City's aquatics program.
Provide work direction and instruction to co-workers.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rulees, regulations, policies and procedures.
Perform custodial and light maintenance duties.
Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or special events as required.

ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor beach environment; subject to sun exposure, noise and distractions.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical agility and stamina; lifting, walking and overall physical movement; carrying, pushing or pulling; heavy lifting up to 100 pounds; sitting and standing for extended periods of time; vision to monitor individual activities and read program materials, a minimum of 20/40 vision with corrective lenses; and hearing and speaking to exchange information with others.
 

All temporary and seasonal workers with the City are employed at will.  Either party may terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without cause, and for any lawful reason or for no reason.

Paid interns shall receive holiday pay. Employees in grant funded positions are eligible for paid holidays if specified in the grant.

Temporary and seasonal employees are not eligible for any other benefits except those mandated by law, such as paid sick leave, workers' compensation, and unemployment coverage.
