Job Responsibilities

Perform forensic evaluations statewide for individuals referred by the State of South Carolina Judicial System to determine mental capacity to stand trial for defendants (adults and juveniles) suspected of having intellectual disability and/or other developmental disabilities.  May work jointly with examiners from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health on cases related to competency for defendants suspected of having a dual diagnosis of intellectual disability and mental illness; may be involved in capital murder/death penalty cases related to Atkins vs. Virginia decision;  provides expert court testimony as required; serves as an agency expert on forensic issues related to individuals with developmental disabilities; provides ongoing consultation an assistance for psychology staff who serve as secondary examiners; administrative duties as required. Travel to DDSN regional centers is required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Doctorate degree in Psychology from an APA accredited program in Psychology and experience in the area of forensic psychology, and possession of a current license to practice psychology OR a license eligible candidate in the State of South Carolina.  Extensive knowledge of forensic psychological assessment and practice standards and responsibilities; knowledge of psychological assessment techniques; experience and skills to select/administer/interpret psychological tests; knowledge and understanding of intellectual disability and other developmental disabilities as well as knowledge and understanding of mental health (Axis I) disorders and differential diagnoses,  ability to communicate effectively with consumer's, staff, relevant agencies and judicial officials; ability to efficiently write reports of findings to the court as well as testify regarding clinical findings. Must have a valid SCDL in good standing.
 

Additional Comments

In addition to the base annual salary, this position receives $5,000 which is designated as Special Assignment Pay and is dependent upon remaining in the Forensic Psychology area within DDSN.

Recruitment/Retention Incentive

 
In accordance with Proviso 117.66 of the 2015-2016 Appropriations Act regarding Healthcare Employee Recruitment and Retention, DDSN will pay qualified employees newly hired as Forensic Psychologists up to 20 percent of their outstanding student loan associated with the completion of their healthcare degree or $7500, whichever is less, each year over a five (5) year period. Payments will be made directly to the employee at the end of each complete year of employment, as per the "Student Loan Repayment Service Agreement."
