Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to perform administrative, and supervisory work in a typical classroom setting and in the field, in supervising, a group of children in recreational activities.

Position Scope:
This is a support position.

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities.  Incumbent(s) may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Plan, develop and administer activities to include sports, hobbies, drama, team games and arts & crafts for the After School program.
  • Prepares and implements lesson planning for each day of the program.
  • Prepares and breaks down the program area for the different activities, ensuring safety and security.
  • Instructs children in the various activities providing guidance and coaching.
  • Enforces the rules and regulations of the facility and of the given activity.
  • Tracks the participants' attendance.
  • Conducts assessments and provides feedback to the participant as well as the parents.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of program or recreational activity supplies.
  • Administers first aid, if necessary.
  • Ensures supervisor is updated orally, or in writing, on all activities and is kept informed of any related issues.
  • May perform facility maintenance, i.e. garbage disposal or cleaning up.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish effective working relationships with children, adults and coworkers.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Ability to be friendly and courteous at all times when working with the children, customers and staff.
  • Ability to be creative with activities for the children. Ability to delegate tasks to assistants. Ability to take direction from supervisory staff.

Minimum Requirements

Required Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented by one (1) year of related experience working with children preferably in a summer camp or after school program environment; or any acceptable combination of education and experience. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field such as education, recreation or physical education preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification will be required three (3) months after hire..
  • Valid Florida Driver's License may be required.
  • Fingerprints and VECHS background check required.
  • Coaching certification or license preferred.
  • 40-hour Child Care Training Certification through DCF required within three (3) months after hire.

 Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • The essential job functions of this position will require the employee to perform the following physical activities.  Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis:
     
    On a continuous basis, sit at desk and/or stand at counter for long periods of time.  Frequently required to walk, see, hear and talk with the public and read presented documents.  On occasion required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, taste, or smell; Intermittently twist and reach; lift or carry weight regularly of 10 pounds and on occasion weight of up to 40 pounds. Specific vision required includes close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Additional Information:
  • There is a one-year probationary period.
  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
 

Must be available to work at least 90% of after school program duration. Must be available to work school days from 12:00pm – 6:00pm; Teacher Planning Days;Winter Break (December 25, 2017 – January 5, 2018);
Spring Break (March 26, 2018 – March 30, 2018); and other special events as requested.

No city paid benefits with the exception of those required by law.
