Duties Summary

Operates and maintains mechanically, electrically, and hydraulically driven equipment, instruments, controls, and appurtenances at various water systems facilities; and performs other related duties as required.

Must be able to work overtime as needed.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates electrically and mechanically operated water systems equipment, instruments, controls, and appurtenances.
  • Analyzes readings on system gauges, recorders, meters, etc.
  • Inspects, tests, services, maintains, operates, records, calibrates, and makes minor repairs of all water plant equipment, machinery, controls, water quality instrumentation, and instruments such as pumps, motors, control center, automatic and mechanical valves, chlorinators, treatment and filtration facilities, gauges, indicators, and meters.
  • Operates and maintains electrical equipment and controls or combustible power driven engines.
  • Operates and maintains telemetering and supervisory controls and data acquisition (SCADA) equipment.
  • Repairs and adjusts hydraulically operated valves such as Cla Val.
  • Operates valves.
  • Monitors the operations of water chlorination stations by testing water for chlorine residual and adjusting the chlorine feed as required; mixes chlorine solution when necessary.
  • Checks chlorinator operating pressure and pumps; checks chlorinator to prevent chlorine leaks, and as required, takes appropriate action to repair leaks; cleans and lubricates chlorinating equipment and instruments.
  • Transports and changes chlorine cylinders or containers.
  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains the routine operations of water treatment and filtration plant equipment used for testing for color, turbidity, odor, taste, pH, and other factors.
  • Adjusts the various chemicals necessary to maintain the desired water quality all in accordance to standard water treatment procedures.
  • As requested, brings back water samples to the water quality lab or designated areas.
  • Feeds chemicals.
  • Cleans and disposes sludge. 
  • Operates high lift equipment.
  • Maintains logs of plant operations and records reading of gauges and meters.
  • Receives and records calls from the public on service interruptions and other related matters; investigates service complaints; reports abnormal functions or readings; prepares reports.
  • Maintains supply of parts, materials, charts, and keeps records of same.
  • Does minor piping work including soldering and welding.
  • Assists other trades workers in plant operations, repairs, installations, and maintenance.
  • May supervise and assign work to others as required.
  • May operate a light truck to transport materials and personnel.
  • Read meters.
  • Performs general maintenance of water plant stations, buildings, structures, equipment, machinery, and grounds.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • two (2) years of electrical and mechanical experience, of which
  • one (1) year shall have involved the operation and maintenance of pumping plant, power plant, marine engine room, or related industrial-type equipment, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing. You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of the job interview.

Examination:  All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points.


Knowledge of:  practices and procedures used in the operation of water plant equipment and instruments; types and functions of machinery and equipment used in a plant; principles and practices of elementary electricity and hydraulics; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.

Ability to:  operate and maintain electrical and mechanical pumping units, auxiliary equipment and distribution system equipment; read meters, charts, and gauges; record readings and prepare and keep operational records; operate computer and peripheral equipment; understand and follow oral and written instructions; and work with dexterity and safety.
