Description

The City of Anaheim Community Services Department is seeking Senior Recreation Leaders for the East Anaheim Gymnasium and the East Anaheim Community Center. This is a part time position of approximately 10 - 20 hours per week, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Staff will be assigned to work under moderate supervision at either the East Anaheim Gymnasium, East Anaheim Community Center or both sites based upon qualifications and availability. East Anaheim Gymnasium staff will coach and officiate youth sports camps, clinics and leagues, set-up and take down program equipment, develop and plan program activities, monitor gymnasium use, process registration, provide customer service, as well as perform related work as required. East Anaheim Community Center staff will set-up and take down equipment for facility rentals, monitor community center use, process registration, provide customer service, as well as perform related work as required. 

Essential Functions

Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coach and officiate youth sports games; set up and take down tables, chairs, sporting and gymnastics equipment, and other equipment and materials.
  • Assist customers at the front desk and on the telephone with questions or concerns regarding recreation programs, sports camps and leagues, and facility rentals; register customers for classes, sports camps and leagues, and facility rentals using department registration and facility software; resolve enrollment, sports camps and leagues, and facility rental issues.
  • Monitor facility use; troubleshoot participant and facility users concerns; ensure facility set-ups are safe, properly executed, and meet facility users needs.
  • Provide direction to Recreation Leaders and other part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain a safe program environment for participants, facility users, and staff; care and maintain all equipment issued; inform supervisor where there are hazards or when equipment needs replacing.
  • Prepare facilities.
  • Communicate with parents and school site staff regarding programs.
  • Assist customers at concession counter; oversee the collection, recording and depositing of all monies received.
  • Plan, organize, implement, and lead one or more recreation program activities and/or systems at one or multiple sites; plan, evaluate, and schedule programs.
  • Assign tasks and duties and monitor performance, including sports fields, courts, youth care centers, and community centers, for programs and services; clean up facility at conclusion of event, rental, or program.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities are as follows:
  • Experience related in the recreation program to which assigned.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • The ability to supervise the facility and the user groups.
  • The ability to assign and supervise staff activities (Recreation Leaders and/or volunteers).
  • Basic principles of employee and volunteer supervision and training.
  • The ability to understand and interpret written and oral instructions, policies and procedures.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • The ability to write reports and complete various forms.
  • Principles, practices, and service delivery needs related to the program area(s) to which assigned.
  • Experience in basketball, volleyball, cheerleading or soccer.
  • The ability to participate in sports activities with children (basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and soccer).
  • Procedures for planning, implementing, and maintaining a variety of recreation and leisure activities and programs; recreational, cultural, age-specific, and social needs of the community.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, codes, and guidelines related to the program area and facilities to which assigned; recreation site management and oversight; safety principles and practices, including basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) methods.
  • Applicable safety precautions and procedures related to the program area(s) and facilities to which assigned.
  • Principles and practices of basic public relations techniques.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping, cash handling, and report preparation; business arithmetic and statistical techniques; modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and computer applications.
  • English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation; techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the City in contacts with the public.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff.
  • Plan, oversee, implement, and coordinate assigned recreation program operations and activities, as well as staff, contractors, and volunteers; plan and prepare recreation activities, reports, and other related program materials.
  • Understand the organization and operation of recreation programs and facilities necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
  • The ability to enforce rules and regulations with facility users.
  • Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations; work independently while supervising facilities and user groups.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply facility use policies and procedures; provide courteous assistance to facility patrons.
  • The ability to walk, run, bend, carry, lift, push, load/unload supplies and set up equipment (up to 80 lbs.).
  • Lift and move tables and chairs and arranging facilities for community events and/or meetings; handle rescues, medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner, including providing basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner; operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed; use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Possession of a current (less than two years) tuberculosis clearance slip and a valid California Driver's License.
  • Must be able to obtain a work permit prior to appointment if under the age of 18.

RETIREMENT – Anaheim employees become members of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS).
 
Employees hired prior to or after January  1, 2013, who are an existing CALPERS member or a member of an agency with reciprocity with the City of Anaheim, will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 55 CalPERS retirement benefit formula.  Employees’ contribute 4.75% on a pre-tax basis for this enhanced retirement benefit.

Employees hired after January 1, 2013
, who have never been a CALPERS member, or is a member of a retirement system (CalPERS or reciprocal) but has a break in service longer than six (6) months, will be enrolled in the  2% @ 62 CALPERS benefit formula.  Employees contribute 6.75% of the normal benefit costs for this retirement benefit.

 

Members are eligible for a pension at retirement with five or more years of full – time equivalent service and age 55. 
 
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN (457): The City of Anaheim enrolls part–time 20-Hour employees in a Deferred Compensation Plan (457). Employees contribute 7.5% of their earnings (before taxes).
 
Part time 30-hour and 20-hour Employees hired after March 31, 1986 pay 1.45% contribution towards the Medicare Plan. The City does not participate in Social Security.
