Description

Under the general supervision of the Grounds and Facilities Maintenance Leader and the Superintendent of Parks, this employee performs and may supervise work necessary to maintain, upgrade, and create facilities, amenities, and ground within the Rock Island Park and Recreation Department System.

Examples of Duties

The employee will perform any and all maintenance or repair tasks required in the Rock Island Park and Recreation Department's system of grounds and facilities including the following examples:

The operation of trucks, tractors, trailers, mowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment as required to meet the needs of the Department;

Responsible for operation and basic maintenance of vehicles, hand and power tools, and equipment;

Repair and maintain both interior and exterior of buildings, and their attendant systems of roads, walks, and amenities;

Tree and brush removal, care and maintenance of related equipment, assistance with landscaping, horticultural and forestry projects;

Manual as well as mechanical snow and ice removal from walks, rinks and roads as well as ice rink maintenance;

The use of powerboats for the repair, moving, and repositioning of floating docks and piers;

Assists with the set-up of playground equipment including repair, painting, and replacement;

Pesticide spraying, fertilizing, general turf maintenance and assists with noxious weed management;

Leaf removal and mulching;

Swimming pool maintenance;

Fitness and civic center maintenance of the buildings and their contents;

Bike and pedestrian path maintenance;

Prepares and maintains the department's sport fields for practice and game play, including dragging, harrowing, watering playing surfaces and marking the field;

Assists with irrigation system installation and maintenance;

Assists with the set-up of special events;

Trash pickup and restroom cleaning;

Demolition and construction of buildings, systems, and features as needed;

Promotes safe conditions at all park facilities;

May supervise a crew of unskilled to semi-skilled part-time or seasonal workers.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Requires the completion of a 4-year high school program or it's equivalent. Training and experience will be considered.

Posses or obtain the knowledge and skills related to the methods and materials required for use in the maintenance of buildings and their systems and construction, ability to climb ladders and work from a man-lift, turf and general grounds maintenance, and hard surface lots, walks, and drives, park maintenance repair and construction, and forestry.

Experience with heavy and light duty trucks, tractors, and equipment normally associated with construction, tree trimming and associated equipment and techniques, and ability to estimate time and material needed for basic projects. To safely operate powered equipment and hand tools, understand and follow oral and written instructions, work independently, exercise initiative and good judgment, perform physical labor, lift heavy objects, traverse rough terrain on job sites and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with all contacts.

Will require occasional emergency call-out during off duty hours.

Possession of a valid Class D Illinois driver's license or an equivalent license from the employee's state of residence.

Obtain within 12 months of hire an Illinois Pesticide Operator's License.

Comply with the City of Rock Island residency requirements, as well as a physical, substance screening, and security and background check.

Supplemental Information

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to tolerate and perform assigned duties in extremes of weather, as well as perform frequent and continuous standing, sitting, walking, climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and have the ability to crouch or crawl.

The employee must use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls. Reach with hands and arms, and be able to talk, hear, and smell. The employee must frequently perform heavy lifting or moving of 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds (as defined by OSHA Work Practice Guide). Specific requirements for lifting and frequencies are stated in terms of the maximum expectations of the position.

While performing the duties of this job the employee works in outside weather conditions of all kinds to inspect and perform work as required. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and sharp hand tools, and regularly exposed to wet, warm, and/or humid conditions, as well as dust, cold, and windy environments. The employee will work in close proximity to, handle and apply pesticides, fertilizers, and use pesticide application equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
