Description

The Norfolk Community Services Board (CSB) provides treatment, supports, and education to the community with a focus on mental illness, substance use addiction, and intellectual/developmental disabilities. Norfolk CSB provides services to persons in acute crisis as well as integrated, person-centered, and recovery-oriented programming for persons needing assistance and support stabilizing in the community.
 
Today, the CSB provides treatment and rehabilitation services to over 6,000 Norfolk citizens yearly. Norfolk CSB seeks team members interested in providing skilled services in a public service environment. We are also seeking persons to join our team that are dedicated to supporting a positive work and treatment environment that instills hope and recovery opportunities for the persons we serve.
 
The CSB is seeking to hire a Licensed Practical Nurse to ensure that PACT consumers receive their medications, to assist the PACT psychiatrist, and to provide support to case managers regarding consumer medication concerns.

Essential Functions

***The departmental hiring rate for this position is $40,805.00 - $42,000.00 annually***

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Follows established protocol to ensure the security and safety of the Medication Room and its contents; to include logging, packaging, transporting, and delivering medication received from local and state pharmacies. 
  • Follows NCSB and Board of Pharmacy regulations and policies for the maintenance of an alternative delivery site to include but not limited to, disposing outdated and discontinued medications according to established procedures. 
  • Performs general and psychiatric nursing duties to include, but not limited to medication administration and education, intramuscular injections, venipuncture, weights, vital signs, consumer crisis intervention, and mental status examinations. 
  • Transcribes medication orders to the MAR as needed, generates new MARs, and provide oversight of MAR completion to ensure accuracy and avoid errors. Provide guidance to PACT teammates as appropriate to correct MARs.
  • Assists in the provision of medical services, such as delivering and monitoring medications, collaboration with medical provides, assistance with inventorying/ordering/refilling medical supplies and external non-psychiatric medications, and requesting medical records from primary care providers, and other providers. 
  • Assists and participates in all hospital care coordination, and hospital discharge/re-integration services, including accessing backup contractual pharmacies/community pharmacies to obtain new/needed medications from discharge prescriptions. 
  • Administers medication as directed by physician in the office or community setting.
  • Reports and records any medication errors.
  • Observes consumers for medication reactions and refers and follows-up for any needed medical evaluations or care.
  • Complies with established legislation, mandates, program standards, and Norfolk CSB requirements regarding consumer services and documentation standards.
  • Assists physician with obtaining and completion of medication prior to authorization forms from various insurance and contracting companies.
  • Participates in team meetings, clinical staffing and supervision (individually and in group).
  • Provides mental health education programs to the team and general population when requested.
  • Assists with orienting new employees to PACT medical and nursing policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required. 

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certifications may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
 
One year of experience in a medical environment performing patient care duties.

The preferred candidate will possess:
  • An Associate's Degree.
  • At least three years' experience in a psychiatric hospital, clinic, jail, or community mental health setting with significant experience working with the mental health population and psychotropic medications.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Requires licensure by Commonwealth of Virginia as Practical Nurse, or if licensed in another state to be eligible via Nursing Licensure Compact.
  • Must be in good standing with the Board of Nurse Examiners, and currently certified in CPR.
  • Work hours: 5 days a week, including weekends, evenings and holidays; 40 hours weekly; rotating schedule.
