Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Resident Advisor.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ The Resident Advisor (RA) develops, coordinates and maintains a program within the community, which strives to provide a positive intellectual, emotional and social living environment for students.

We seek individuals that have the ability to display sensitivity to and interest in people, neutrality, respect for the dignity and worth of the individual, open-mindedness on issues, degree of empathy, ability to handle autonomy, make decisions and his/her success within an academic community.

The RA position is a 9 month position (September - June) with the option to work during the summer term.

Essential Job Duties

The primary responsibility of the Resident Advisor is to provide support, encouragement and leadership to his/her community. The RA should be available to his/her residents and empower his/her residents to grow and develop as good citizens. The RA helps to facilitate a positive living and academic environment. This is accomplished by the following:

  • Build relationships with the residents in the community.
  • Assist residents in developing relationships with each other.
  • Hold residents accountable for their behavior.
  • Educate residents on the policies and procedures of BBCC Residential Life.
  • Promote student involvement in the campus community, activities, and events.
  • Role model positive attitudes and behaviors.
  • Help to facilitate an environment that allows students to meet their academic goals.
  • Provide opportunities to for residents to look at the world from different perspectives.
  • Serve as a resource.
  • Provide helping skills for residents in need.

The Resident Advisors are also responsible for the following administrative tasks:
  • Check-in and check-out of residents.
  • Report to Head Resident Advisor (HRA).
  • Conduct and lead residence hall floor meetings.
  • Sort, message, and deliver mail to residents.
  • Keeping track of resident occupancy.
  • Documenting policy violations.
  • Depending on the number of residents, RAs may be asked to work at the front desk for up to 6 hours a week.
  • Report maintenance and facility concerns and conduct health and safety inspections.
  • Responsible for monitoring the residence halls up to 16 hours a week for safety and security concerns. Issue notices for violations of residence halls rules, and report all violations to HRA and Residence Hall Director within 24 hours.
  • Open and lock outside building doors, kitchens and rooms.
  • Design and construct door decorations and residence hall decorations that coordinate with the overall residence hall theme prior to the beginning of each quarter.
  • Responsible for general housekeeping items such as emptying garbage containers, sorting recyclables, distributing furniture and furnishings to rooms.
  • Other duties as assigned by Head Resident Advisor and/or Residence Hall Director.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

At the time of application, candidates must possess the following:

  • A minimum of two quarters or semesters of on-campus living at a college or university.
  • Be enrolled in 10 or more credits for Fall Quarter 2018 and be in good academic standing.
  • Residents Advisors are required to live in the community for which he/she is responsible.
