Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified candidates for a Head Resident Advisor.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­  The Head Resident Advisor (HRA) facilitates the social, academic, and personal adjustment of students to the residence hall and our college. The HRA develops a sense of community among Resident Advisors (RA), residents as members of a floor, residents of a hall, and active participants in the residence life system. The HRA serves as a positive role model to residents and RA staff members. The HRA enforces the rules and policies of Residence Halls, Big Bend Community College, and Residential Life. The HRA acts as a liaison between residents, RAs and the college administration.

This position is not eligible for State or Federal Work Study.

Essential Job Duties

General

  1. Attend and lead weekly staff meetings.
  2. Assist Director of Residence Halls & Residential Life in orientating and training of residence hall staff.
  3. Assist in implementing and enforcing program rules and disciplinary procedures.
  4. Assist in the supervision of the residence hall and Resident Advisors, responding to all requests and emergencies during on-duty hours. Remain on-call for the remainder of the weekend.
  5. Attend and participate in staff training sessions held prior to the beginning of each quarter and throughout the year.
  6. Contact the Director of Residence Halls & Residential Life on behalf of the residents regarding issues of concern to the residents.
  7. Maintain appropriate administrative office and student records while maintaining confidentiality.
  8. Lead daily hall staff meetings and communicate regularly with the Director.
  9. Attend scheduled meetings with the Director.
  10. Create RA monthly schedules and cover RA shifts when they are absent.
  11. Responsible to be present and help with the Residence Hall check-in and check-out process.
  12. Responsible to answer the Residence Hall emergency cell phone after hours.
  13. Perform other tasks as required.

Community and Student Development
 
  1. Assist residents in their adjustment to roommate and community living.
  2. Design and implement experiences for floor members that enhance the social, educational, community, and personal development of residents and connects them to the floor, living-learning community (if applicable), building, and college community.
  3. Conduct periodic floor meetings with the Resident Advisor of that floor for the purpose of planning experiences, disseminating information, and explaining residence hall policies and procedures.
  4. Relate well to individuals of all socio-economic, ethnic, racial, cultural, disability, and religious backgrounds, encouraging better understanding of cultural diversity and individual differences on the floor and in the residence hall.
  5. Conduct disciplinary conferences at the request of the Director.
  6. Respond to all witnessed violations of Residence Life and college policies occurring within Big Bend Community College residence halls. Prepare and submit the appropriate report to the Director within 24 hours. 

Administrative
 
  1. Actively inform residents of pertinent academic and college information.
  2. Assist, as requested, in the handling of all emergency situations (e.g., fire, health, safety).
  3. Assist in the opening and closing of the residence halls, requiring time prior to the beginning of quarter courses and time following the completion of these courses.
  4. Receive and promptly process requests for maintenance repairs and custodial needs received from residents.
  5. Assess the physical condition of rooms before and after occupancy, preparing and filing the appropriate form with the immediate supervisor in a timely fashion.
  6. Interpret and disseminate to the residents information/directives from Residence Life.

On-Call



HRAs respond to lockouts, emergency situations, and policy violations. They also monitor residence hall conditions and fill out maintenance and custodial orders as necessary. Being on-call is an ideal time to be visible throughout the residence hall. It provides time to communicate with the RAs and socialize with other residents.

 

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of two quarters or semesters of on-campus living at a college or university.
  • Must be enrolled in 10 or more credits for Fall Quarter 2018 and be in good academic standing.
  • Required to live in the residence halls for the duration of position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and conflicting demands & priorities.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
