SUMMARY

The incumbent under the guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the performance of a variety of bench, and hand tools, field and machine operations, requiring accuracy and precision, in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.  Work is characterized by its assignment of duties requiring the application of more than one maintenance trade.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned.  Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.  Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
 
  1. Adjust, clean and repair all mechanical equipment normally found in wastewater facilities.  This includes valves, pumps, drives, gears, belts, etc.
  2. Dismantle and inspect machinery and determine appropriate methods for performing maintenance and repair.
  3. Construct building partitions; replace roofs, doors and windows as necessary.
  4. Operate acetylene and arc welding equipment, cuts and fits metal, brazes and welds mobile and stationary equipment.  Fabricate equipment from raw materials.
  5. Repair and replace plant plumbing and fixtures as required.
  6. Paint, clean and maintain wastewater pump stations as required.
  7. Operate excavation equipment, front end loader, lift truck and man lift.
  8. Perform other related duties as assigned.
  9. Must work overtime, callout or standby as required.
  10. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or GED is required.  Minimum of two years previous mechanical experience, welding, plumbing or metal fabrication is preferred.  Must obtain either a Class I Wastewater Treatment License or Grade I Water Distribution License (depending on placement) within one year of employment.  Must obtain a Class A CDL within one year of employment.  Must obtain air brake designation within two years of employment.
 
Other Skills and Abilities:
The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment in the department.  The incumbent must have good verbal skills as well as good organizational skills.  Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position.  Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally stand, walk, climb, talk and hear.  Frequently sit and use hands to finger, handle or feel.  The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl.  The sense of smell is also necessary.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision.  Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary.  The employee is occasionally required to lift more than 100 pounds.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.  The incumbent works in high precarious places and is at risk of electrical shock or vibration.  The incumbent is also exposed to non-weather related wet, humid conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.

The City of Fort Smith, Arkansas ("City") has entered into a Consent Decree in litigation with the United States of America and the State of Arkansas ("Consent Decree").  The Consent Decree was filed on April 6, 2015, in civil action 14-cv-02266-PKH, pending in the United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas Fort Smith Division. Vacation
After 12 consecutive months of continuous service, 10 days.
After 8 consecutive years of continuous service, 12 days.
After 10 consecutive years of continuous service, 15 days.
After 11 consecutive years of continuous service, 16 days.
After 12 consecutive years of continuous service, 17 days.
After 13 consecutive years of continuous service, 18 days.
After 14 consecutive years of continuous service, 19 days.
After 15 consecutive years of continuous service, 20 days.
In addition to these vacation days, each employee will receive one discretionary day off with pay each year after 12 months of continuous service.
Annual vacation leave and discretionary day shall not be accumulated for more than a twelve month period from the date of accrual.

Sick Leave
Full time employees will be eligible to accrue sick leave benefits from their date of hire at a rate of 1 day for each continuous month of employment. Unused sick leave may be accumulated from year to year to a maximum accumulation of 960 hours at any one time.

Retirement
Full time employees have a 401a retirement account through ICMA-RC.  The City will contribute 5% of your gross earnings into your retirement account.  You may also choose to supplement your retirement with your own contributions.  This may be done through a 457 or IRA account, also through ICMA-RC.
