Summary

AC Transit is actively searching for qualified students for an internship supporting the Environmental Engineering department. This internship will specifically be providing support by assisting with day to day operations as well as special projects. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for a student with significant coursework in environmental engineering or other engineering related discipline, such as civil or chemical. The candidate chosen for this position will not only get excellent paid work experience but also have exposure to learning from experts in the field. This position is only open to students who are currently enrolled in a Bay Area undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate school and can dedicate approximately 20 hours per week - in at least 3-hour blocks of time - during the business week at the District's Central Maintenance Facility in East Oakland. The intern must be able to commit to working 16-20 hours per week during regular semesters and have the opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer and winter semesters. Interns receive free transportation on AC Transit system.
 

Representative Functions

  • Work with the Environmental Engineer on the compliance of all applicable environmental regulations, governmental requirements and AC Transit policies for hazardous waste/hazardous material, stormwater and wastewater programs.
  • Support department in data collection, management and evaluation.
  • May assist with fieldwork to collect environmental data.
  • Support department in chemical inventory review.
  • Deliver expected results on assigned projects with guidance from Environmental Engineer.
  • May have exposure to MS Office Excel and Auto CAD software to display, analyze and manage data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Must be currently enrolled as a full-time junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student in an applicable field of study at an accredited and recognized Bay Area college that provides both Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. Applicable fields of study include environmental engineering or other engineering related discipline, such as civil or chemical. Proof of current enrollment is required.

Experience: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail, and well-developed time-management skills. Previous professional work experience is not required.

Desirable Qualifications:
Advanced organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. High level of integrity, strong work ethic, and good judgment.
Ability to self-motivate; works productively with minimal supervision, and thrives in a team environment.
 

Additional Information

Physical Requirements: Must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an office setting operating a personal computer, keyboards, and other peripheral equipment. Must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs.
 
Undergraduates are paid $16 - $17 per hour and Graduate students are paid $18 per hour.
