The Opportunity:
 
The Southwest Region Maintenance Team in Vancouver is seeking a Rest Area Attendant to perform routine and preventive maintenance for the Safety Rest Areas throughout the region. This position requires a self-directed individual who's able to take independent action to resolve maintenance problems as they occur. The individual selected for this opportunity will be responsible for duties including semi-skilled maintenance and repairs, painting, garbage collection/disposal as well as landscape and vegetation maintenance. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and customer service when responding to inquiries and complaints from the traveling public.

These positions will perform the following work:

  • Perform janitorial services at the Safety Rest Area, including but not limited to: cleaning, disinfecting, replenishing supplies, sweeping and mopping floors in facilities.
  • Interact daily with non-profit organizations and traveling public and respond to questions and complaints.
  • Perform data collection using an iPad and/or computer for inventory.
  • Maintain landscaped areas by mowing, trimming and pruning trees and shrubbery.
  • Collect garbage bags from cans and place them in garbage truck.
  • Pick up litter and debris in and around Rest Area grounds.
  • Inspect restrooms and perform minor repairs needed to stalls, plumbing, lighting, and paper dispensers.
  • Clean and maintain RV dump stations.
  • Check grounds for and make minor repairs due to vandalism.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as daily recording of water usage, taking water samples, assisting motorists, maintaining inventory of supplies, recording vehicle usage, cleaning effluent screens, performing preventive maintenance on mowers and other gardening tools.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
An ideal candidate will have the following:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions including extreme conditions and temperatures on uneven terrain.
  • Ability and willingness to work any shift, including weekends and holidays, and be subject to overtime and emergency callouts.
  • Be able to respond (physically arrive) to the Vancouver Maintenance Facility within 45 minutes.
  • Possess basic computer skills to receive and send email, use the internet, and enter information into computer programs, forms and mobile technology devices.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with others and contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights.
 
Preferred/Desired experience, skills and abilities:
  • At least one year of experience performing minor repair and maintenance on buildings and plumbing/electrical systems, as well as janitorial duties.
  • At least one year experience performing landscaping activities.
  • Experience performing traffic control.
  • Experience and/or training on related BMP's.
  • Experience working with designated hazardous materials.
  • Experience operating a wide variety of hand and power tools, equipment and machinery.
Note:
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us.
