Summary

This internship is only available to candidates that are actively enrolled in a college level, degree-oriented program related to civil engineering or survey work.  Eligibility to remain within the employ of this Internship ends upon graduation, unless the candidate enrolls in another college-level, degree-oriented program (e.g., graduate program) immediately following graduation.  Internship schedules typically consist of part-time work during the academic year (flexible up to 69 hours per month) and up to 40 hours per week during the summer months [June to September] (for a maximum of four months in a year, with the remaining hours worked to be less than 70 hours a month). 

 

Essential Functions

  • Assists with research and data collection related to design of County road projects.
  • Assists with construction inspection of County road projects.
  • Assists with survey support for County Road Projects.
  • Assists with data collection and inventory of County road assets including, but not limited to, pavement, guardrail, signs, bridges, culverts, and traffic counts.
  • Assists with general data entry, data management, reporting, permitting, outreach, and other duties that support the efforts of Engineering Division staff.
  • Assists with general administration, file organization, scanning, database management, and GIS Mapping and data collection.

May be tasked with performing related duties.  Related duties as required are duties that may not be specifically listed in the position description, but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's classification of work. 

Minimum Qualifications

No professional experience required.  Must be actively enrolled in a college level, degree-oriented program related to civil engineering or survey work. 

Requires knowledge of:

  • Operation of standard office equipment including computer and applicable software including;
  • Operation of standard office equipment including laser printers, fax machine, copy machine, calculator, computer and scanner
  • GIS, GPS data collection, and AutoCAD preferred
  • Basic engineering principles preferred 
Requires the ability to:
  • Work with people in a courteous manner
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow the judicial code of ethics
  • Lift up to 40 pounds
Licenses and/or Certifications:

Valid Driver's License 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Must be able to stand or walk on uneven terrain for extended periods, climb, lift equipment or samples up to 40 pounds, and have sufficient hand-eye coordination to operate computers and surveying equipment.  Work performed will be a combination of office and field environments. 

Hazards: 

Those present in a normal office environment and hazards likely to be encountered in rural and remote field locations.
