Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs-Western Nebraska Veterans Home is actively seeking a food service cook to add to our caring staff assisting our military heroes/veterans, who reside at the Western Nebraska Veterans' Home. Perform skilled work in the preparation and serving of food in a long term care facility with a state of the art kitchen area. 

Hours: Rotating hours between 5 am and 7:30 pm with varied days off. To include some weekends and State Holidays. 

Examples of Work

Prepare and serve meals following portion control standards; food service safety and sanitation; operate and clean equipment; instruct Food Service staff in preparation of routinely prepared food items for members of the Western Nebraska Veterans' Home. 

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: One year of coursework/training in food preparation and/or cooking and baking experience in a large scale food service operation.

PREFERRED:Experience in institutional, commercial or large quantity cooking; interpreting menus and following recipes.

OTHER: Pre-employment background checks and drug testing is required. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of special diets prepared by facility, recipes for preparation of meats, vegetables, soups, salads and baked goods; facility standards and procedures for cleaning dishes, utensils, equipment; food preparation schedules. Ability to tolerate high temperature and high humidity; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with facility residents, patients, members and staff; prepare special diets; bend, stoop, lift and carry food items, equipment and supplies.
